Munawwar Suharwardi shot dead in Karachi

Assassination triggers protests as bank,
several vehicles torched

By A H Khanzada

KARACHI: Munawwar Hussain Suharwardi, a close aide of former prime minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairperson Banazir Bhutto, and spokesman of the Bilawal House, was gunned down near Grumandir on Thursday afternoon.

Suharwardi, also the Information Secretary of the PPP, Sindh, was shot dead from a close range on the Business Recorder Road, while he was parking his vehicle there. Following the assassination, violence erupted in Jamshed Road, Hyderabad Colony, Jail Chowrangi, Lyari, Malir and several other localities as annoyed PPP workers torched a bank and several vehicles.

Suharwardi, a resident of house No 215, Hyderabad Colony, had left his residence about 2:15 pm for the Muslim Commercial Bank (MCB) located on the Business Recorder Road. He was parking his Honda Civic car (ABH-809) near the bank branch, when an unidentified terrorist fired upon him, eyewitnesses and police said.

He sustained three bullets in his face chest and leg. The witnesses said despite his injuries, Suharwardi left his car and hired a rickshaw for the Aga Khan Hospital. Azam Khan, the rickshaw driver, told the police that the injured (Suharwardi) was fully conscious but was worried about his family. “From the scene of the crime to the Jail Chowrangi, the injured had been talking to me and was asking for reaching the hospital as soon as possible,” Khan added. Suharwardi died in the operation theatre of the Aga Khan Hospital, hospital sources told The News.

Suharwardi was shot at and injured seriously, when he was parking his car on the Business Recorder Road near Grumandir, said Dr Kamran Afzal, the Town Police Officer (TPO) of Jamshed Town. The attackers were two; one of them fired upon him (Suharwardi), while the other remained in a car, which stopped very close to deceased’s car, he added. A security guard, who was performing duty at a computer shop in the vicinity, told the police that one person fired upon a man as he came out from his car after brief talks, the TPO added. Police have collected two empties from the site, which was fired from a TT pistol, he said.

A press note issued by the Sindh police said two unidentified assailants in a white Alto car opened fire on PPP leader Munawwar Hussain Suharwardi about 2: 40 pm. The capital city police have constituted different teams to probe into the incident, the press note added.

The news of Suharwardi’s murder speared like a jungle fire. Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, Opposition Leader in the Sindh Assembly reached the Aga Khan hospital, where dozens of PPP workers were already gathered. The annoyed PPP workers chanted slogans against the provincial and the federal governments. Hundreds of PPP leaders and workers had gathered at the deceased’s residence.

All the shops and business activities were forced to close in the Hyderabad Colony and surrounding localities. The PPP workers also fired shots in the air to block traffic on several roads. They attacked the United Bank’s Hyderabad Colony branch and torched it after ransacking the furniture. A group of enraged people stopped a vehicle (JX-6509), carrying soft drinks, near the PPP Secretariat and set it on fire after breaking its glasses. Another mob appeared at Jamshed Road No 3, where it stopped a coach (LSA-2587) and set it ablaze. Besides, several vehicles, which were parked along the Jamshed Road in front of different mechanic shops were also damaged.

In Lyari, annoyed people took to the streets and forced shopkeepers to close their businesses. They hurled stones on the traffic, damaging dozens of vehicles. Unidentified persons stopped a bus of route No 7-C in Chakiwara and set it on fire. Annoyed people hurled stones at the Bank Al-Habib and the Habib Bank’s branches at Grumandir and tried to torch them, but police acted timely and dispersed the mob, the Jamshed Town TPO said. Violence was also reported from Muhabbat Nagar Malir, Al-Falah and Quaidabad.

Talking to newsmen at Suharwardi’s residence, PPP Sindh President Nisar Khuhro said: “The murder of Munawwar is a massage to the citizens of Karachi that no one is safe in the metropolis and common citizens are at the mercy of terrorists.” He added: “The government knows very well who is behind this murder and a series of terrorists activities. but the government, if there is any, has turned a blind eye and a deaf ear.”

Present on the occasion, Nasrullah Shajee, the Deputy Parliamentary Leader of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal in the Sindh Assembly and a neighbour of Suharwardi, told newsmen: “It is a history whenever Muttahida Qaumi Movement became part of the government, innocent people have been murdered.” The provincial government should be dissolved and action should be taken against terrorists “under the government shelter”, he added.

The funeral prayers for Munawwar Suharwardi were held in Shaheed Ground, Hyderabad Colony, after Isha prayers. The funeral was attended by thousands of leaders and workers of the PPP, some leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Pakistan Muslim league besides Karachi Nazim Namatullah Khan. He was laid to rest in Esa Nagri Graveyard near Hassan Square. Heavy police and Rangers contingents were deployed for the safe passage and security of the funeral procession.

Suharwardi joined the PPP Children Wing, when he was in class VII, family sources told The News. He remained committed to the party till his last breath. He leaves behind two daughters and a son.

Just for people's information, the kidnappers, shooters or robbers do talk to their targets, asking an address of somewhere, or just ask you are the relatives of some one taking names, they do it just making you engaged so the people don't spot them as odds, and after talking to you for a while, they resume their work of extortion etc.

So basically no one aided him, apart from the rickshaw driver? Thats really sad, especially in a country like Pakistan. I saw an accident once infront of E&ME college (big army hqs for one of their corps), and a Daewoo (en route to Lahore) hit a man at a high velocity, and the man was soaked in blood but still alive. The army officials of our college refused to aid him or drive him to the hospital, and also stopped the students from doing anything.

Lets again pray for the safety of all Karachiites
