Sodium

How much sodium should one look out for which is too much for one serving? It seems like everything I buy has like 300-400mgs of sodium… is that too much? What is the normal avg amt per serving?

Re: Sodium

err.. you are talking about 300-400 milligram (mg) NOT grams

Because 400 grams is almost half kg

Daily recommended intake of sodium is about 2000 milligram, which is equal to 2 grams

so 300-400 mg is alright in any product, unless your doctor advise you otherwise

Re: Sodium

yeah I meant mg, lemme go edit that now

Re: Sodium

Salt = sodium x 2.5
If you know how much sodium is in a food, you can work out roughly the amount of salt it contains by multiplying the sodium by 2.5. So if a portion of food contains 1.2g sodium then it contains about 3g salt.

recomended salt intake per day is 6mg. 6g of salt is about a teaspoonful. This is not a large amount, especially when you consider that 75% of the salt we eat is already in the food we buy.

0.8g of salt in a roti/naan bread/pitta bread
portion of deep and crispy pizza** 4.1g**
a pot noodle 3.75g
0.5g in a slice of bread
a 1/2 can of baked beans has 1.4g of salt
a 1/2 can of Spaghetti hoops 2g
A bowl of Rice Krispies/Cornflakes contains around 0.65g
packet of crisps 0.6g
Pizza Hut Italian Pizza Plus (pizza, potato wedges, cheesecake)** 9.7g**
KFC Variety Meal (three chicken pieces, two hot wings, Colonel's Crispy Strip, regular fries, regular diet coke) 6.3g
Burger King Chicken BLT Baguette Meal (chicken BLT baguette, regular fries, regular coca cola) 4.8g
McDonalds Quarter Pounder with Cheese Meal (quarter pounder burger with cheese, medium fries, medium coca cola) 3.2g

In a typical day, someone eating the most salty foods would consume 24g of salt.

:hmmm: interesting info :k:
