Socialize Socialize ...

How important is it to socialize with colleagues ? yes , I mean after work.. for example , if they are going for drinks after work .. would you join them ? ( well not really join in alcohol consumption , but just be part of the group and have pepsi instead :hula: )

Similarly , for other evenings out with colleagues , would you take an active interest in the team bonding sessions?

Re: Socialize Socialize ...

Its enough spending 8-10 hours with them....

BTW if you are friends with your colleague..only then...

Re: Socialize Socialize ...

It is a tough to climb the corporate ladder without socializing with your team and even other teams. But I will keep it to minimum , join a few and leave a positive and big impression

Re: Socialize Socialize ...

Good question.

At my previous job my supervisor became my friend, but work wise things got ugly and it turned me off making friends at work. At my next job I don't plan to be so friendly and just stick to my work but I guess its important to be firendly and approachable at any job. =/

Re: Socialize Socialize ...

Very true there Mirch.. Its difficult to climb the corporate ladder without socializing ... So I guess , we just have to be part of some of them and try and leave a positive impression ..

I try to attend as many as I can .. but only stay there for an hour and afterwards I excuse myself out of the session.

Re: Socialize Socialize ...

Sara this strategy will work if you do not have ambitions to get ahead at your job. If you are comfortable at the level you are. But if want promotions , bonuses , upward mobility then being friendly and approachable is not enough. Might work in a mom and pop kind of setup but not in a corporate setup.

Re: Socialize Socialize ...

Collegiality is something that needs to be developed over time through a variety of interaction modes, including those outside the confines of the workplace. For me it's second nature really - social lunches, dinners, drinks etc. with a bunch of colleagues, or going out for drinks randomly after work etc. are all essential means of making sure that you remain active and informed about everything going on at your workplace, and it can often lead to better opportunities at the workplace.

Speaking of socializing outside work, at many organizations, the boundaries are really blurry... organizations like Google and Cisco want their employees to do their work and talk about it in a variety of social settings including formal and informal ones. It can be argued that such an environment may be one of the reasons for the success of these firms.

Re: Socialize Socialize …

And all these year I thought you were a pakka pakka musalman , won’t drink. :naraz:

Re: Socialize Socialize ...

Mirch bhai... dunno about the "pakka" musalman bit, but I try by sticking to coke/pepsi/juice coktails.

Re: Socialize Socialize ...

I know , just teasing you. :D

Re: Socialize Socialize ...

I do socialize after work especially since my dept is very much into "drinks" after work to welcome someone, to bid farewell, to celebrate something or just to socialize! In fact, i have learned about buying houses 101 at such events since we dun talk about work outside work. :-D
