i will be very angry at someone who abuses the system, be it a desi or a while man. the system was put in place to help individuals and families who are unable to make a living, be it thru unemployment and/or ill health. i see a lot of people who take welfare and work under the table, not report the income. it's fraud, plain fraud and our anger is towards them.
Socail welfare should be a short term program. I know many people who dont look for jobs on purpose, or even worst, keep having kids, so their welfare check gets bigger.
I understand the anger towards frauds and those who have no interest in working ever (some of my classmates in school used to say they aren't going to go to college because they hate studying and because there's always dole!) but it seems like people just don't want their tax money to be spent on others. The attitude that you're living because of my money and you have no self-respect just rubbed me the wrong way. The government is spending a large percentage of your tax money on you, you're not short of the comforts of life, you're also getting tonnes of benefits like child support etc so why are you bitter that someone on the dole can afford gadgets?
I agree that the welfare programme should be short term.
I think welfare systems do overall good than bad, as long as the government isn't in a lot of debt due to these programs.
This is what living in a society means, you don't think about just yourself but about others too.
Besides, it probably helps keep the crime rates down, because the slobs won't stop being slobs just cause you stopped welfare. They'd switch to some sort of crime(not all of them 2%, just throwing a number), so they don't have to work regular job. So look at it this way.
Welfare = lower crime rate + lower number of bums and beggars on the street
Welfare is designed to help those who need it and I'm quite happy to pay for such people through direct or indirect taxation.
I only get irked when I see people defrauding the system.
I'm glad we have it and I understand the importance of it! Such as the NHS, Education and other social programmes. Without it many people would be in dire positions.
This is much better then the pure capitalistic approach.

What I find very amusing, is that people who scream the loudest against these matters and seem to be very emtional about it, are people who are frauds themselves, or people who have benefitted (or still do) from it as well.

I have always been employed (Alhamdulillah) and never had to spend a single day on unemployment benefits. And I don't mind that the government supports people who are out of job to make sure they have a safe roof to sleep under and can afford to feed themselves and their families. Even within that Life1 thread you are referring to I have mentioned that I am glad that there is a welfare system and that it helps those who really need help.
What pisses me off though, is the fact that a lot of people misuse it and then have the audacity to claim that it's their right to do so. I just can't accept that. When I see people who live off benefits for an extended period of time and at the same time drive flashy cars and run around with the latest mobile phones every couple of months, I get really mad.
I dont understand how people can live off social welfare, all I know that its not a lot of money you get and it gets lesser and lesser with time, plus you relie on the system, if they decide to give less, there is nothing that you can do about / against it. In Germany there is the Harz 4 system, that people get the minimum to survive and things out of the extraordinary are not in (like holidays, fun trips, eating out).
I myself or husband too never have had a single day on unemployment thank God. Like Umer, it does piss of off, such hattey kattey people who can work but dont do as they like the 'easy money'.
Statistics show that Welfare fruad commited by the average folk at the bottom end of society is nothing compared to so called "royals", nowhere near corporate fruad and certainly not as expensive as waging long and pointless "un-winable" wars.... yet the media has a love for discriminating the smaller party and making mountains from mole hills. Its what they are good at...
In Tommorows world there might not be a National Health system, or a transport system or a national bank... no free or subsidised education and no more free welfare programs..... when the children will ask the elders why this has all gone?
They will say "We were too busy voting for some idiot on X factor or too busy cheering that millionaire footballer rather than voting ot protesting for our rights"
Secondly: No I am not content with tax money being used to wage wars and luckily I live in a country that has not engaged in any war since WW2, Alhamdulillah. But for the sake of argument, let’s assume I was a resident of the US and would be paying taxes there: I would still not be content with my tax money being used for warfare. However that does not make the misuse of government benefits right.

I earned 100$, Paid $40 in Tax, I have $60 to live on, I can just feed my family and pay rent, saving 0$
Many on welfare worked under the table earned $70 + they got $30 from my tax, they got $100 to spend. They used $60 to feed their family and $40 for other aiyashiaan/savings (leverage that I do not have)
ONLY if they all start reporting their earning, govt will lower their tax rate and will only take $20 tax from me and I have some money to use for ayeyashi/savings.
