Social networking sites

too social!

Social networking sites (well Facebook) has a feature called checkin. You check-in and it shows your contracts around you on a map. in other words, you can stalk your contacts movements while on FB!

Google maps also has a similar feature (not socially interactive) where you can locate yourself on map within 10-20 meters accuracy (no GPS data involved)!

Apple also has MobileMe feature. Keeping all these location bases services and social connectivity in mind, do you feel comfortable with the direction online social interaction is heading?

Re: Social networking sites

What i want to say on this matter is that most users are not aware of the kind of info they are putting out for the whole world to see. So everyone and anyone who signs up for such websites should be very careful with what they share on net and how they put their personal info up for everyone to see. Most feel they have worked their privacy settings accordingly but there is always a catch.

Re: Social networking sites

Sounds like Stalking made easier and packaged as "social networking".

Re: Social networking sites

I'm not on fb any more, but it's tempting too join back, blackberry messenger has a location feature that you can ebable to let your contact know where you are

Re: Social networking sites

if you are so much concerned about being stalk then why would you "check in" to let people know about it .. ??? ???

you see the fire, you jump in the fire "WILLINGLY" and then you complain .. oh its burning .. ..

Re: Social networking sites

Agreed...if you are so worried about being stalked then just don't indulge yourself into these things.

Two other major stalker services are also twitter and foursquare....if you willingly want whole world to know where you are eating and sleeping....then don't complain about. Twitter, FB and foursquare, they are all very tempting....great way to make online friends and network. But again I find them waste of time and non-productive if you are not using them for something useful like business or promoting/marketing etc. They really take away your focus from other more "human" things in life.

On the other hand, some people enjoy being stalked. They love tweeting and foursquaring every details of their life....what time they getting to work and what they ate in lunch to what movie they watched......To think of it I actually find it quite disturbing but to each it's own. "Everyone is doing it, so it is ok to do it too" kinda attitude where many do not realize or do not take things too seriously. It is ok to have some stalkers on hand...they are harmless.....
