Social media - Impact on our lives

So what impact is social media having in breaking the taboos between different cultures/countries?

Re: Social media - Impact on our lives

but marriages between Indian and Pakistani people was always a common thing way before introduction of social media. Not only famous cricketers like Mohsin Hasan Khan and Zaheer Abbas married Indian ladies, its been also common in masses as well.

Re: Social media - Impact on our lives

Social media destroyed our real social life

Re: Social media - Impact on our lives

^ I agree, but all those people belonged to an elite who had the chance to travel to India or in some cases had relationships there. Social media is providing an opportunity for the common people to interact hence breaking all taboos. In this case the guy is from layyah and the girl is from Orissa, therefore cultural differences are there, no family ties and then difference of religions.

Agreed to some extent,

Re: Social media - Impact on our lives

yesterday, someone raised a question in political talk show. seems relevant to this topic as well. 10-15 years, we didn't have so many TV channels and communication resources and now we got many channels and communication resources. Have we grown more tolerant over these years?

Re: Social media - Impact on our lives

rise of intolerance has different reasons, mostly related to the states own policies to deal with internal and external threats. For example we don't hear much about balochistan issue on the mainstream media, but is that hidden from the world? No. Interactions are needed as a first to understand each other.

Re: Social media - Impact on our lives

Can't disagree with the bold part, but most of times media as a whole (including social media) has to go far to get acknowledgement that it promoted harmony and tolerance. Seems those other factor (in your words internal and external threats) are more powerful than media (which provide interaction among people)

Granny?? Doesn’t seem that old, haven’t watched the video yet.

Re: Social media - Impact on our lives

States have been brainwashing people through media for a long time, but now they can't do much in the wake of social media. Before the advent of this medium I couldn't have thought of tweeting directly to Imran khan, Maryam Nawaz. After all abid sher Ali would have read something that I sent to him that merited a block. :D whole of Egyptian dissent was fought on social media, turkey has recently imposed curbs on this medium. This is creating sleepless nights in some quarters.

Re: Social media - Impact on our lives

you can see excess misuse of social media to propagate false information..people share and trust such info...

currently there is false propaganda against shahrukh khan is going on that he said he will leave india if modi becomes pm....

there was no news as shahrukh never said such thing but suddenly after election bjp supporters started this propaganda which forced shahrukh to clarify his position....

trolls are now used to abuse and insult opponents on social media..

Re: Social media - Impact on our lives

Oh God, I remember one day when Billy B and I exchanged 150 tweets in half a day, lol. Well I don't think I need to tell anyone what the content of our tweets was. I was actually quite impressed, and no he hasn't blocked me despite all that.

Now this little information better not get leaked out to Anwar Pasha! I'm watching you all.

Re: Social media - Impact on our lives

i remember that during my childhood, a couple of times some people who had been living abroad brought their white wives to the town. They'd take them on the roofs, and then open them for display for the whole town. I used to be fascinated by that scene a lot... too bad i didnt get a gori for myself. :D

Re: Social media - Impact on our lives

It is just like anyother media tool, like Newspaper can present a rumour as fact same can be done by social media. It is not just media, it is the revolution :)
