Re: Soaps

Good luck finding a soap made all the time without animal-sourced glycerin :cb:

Re: Soaps

so the’yre all the same? :naraz: it’s not funny slaps

Re: Soaps

It’s not that they are all the same, it’s that companies keep changing their glycerine supply depending on what’s cheapest on the market.

The goal of soap companies is to manufacture at the lowest possible cost. Some months pork-based glycerine is cheapest, some months beef-based, and some months vegetable glycerine is cheaper than the rest.

The only products for which I know some companies are careful about sourcing their glycerine from vegetables only are toothpastes/dentifrices. Since these actually go in the body, some companies use vegetable glycerine only, in response to pressure from vegetarian and religious groups, particularly Jewish groups.

I know that in 2002 Crest in Western Europe used vegetable glycerine only, and in 2005 Crest in North America were in the process of switching to vegetable glycerine.

Probably the best thing you can do is email the customer services organisations of various soap and ask about their glycerine. I’d be quite surprised if any say they use exclusively vegetable glycerine. Since soaps don’t go into the body, there’s less demand or pressure for “vegetarian soap”.

Re: Soaps

cetafil

Re: Soaps

^^

Contains by products of fats that will be sourced from either animal or vegetable sources.

Cetaphil daily facial cleanser contains glycerine, and the bars contain Sodium Stearate and Sodium Tallowate, both of which are produced from vegatable or animal fats.

Re: Soaps

I might have a solution for you - try looking for olive-oil based soaps.

And at this link: http://www.vegblog.org/archive/2005/03/15/glycerin.php

Post number 33 has a letter from Unilever that says:

Hi,

Thanks for writing!

Caress, Lever 2000, and Dove Ultra Moisturizing Body Washes do not
contain animal matter. The glycerin in the product is not of animal
origin.

Any products containing the following ingredients may have animal by
products. Please check the ingredient label.

Glycerin - Is either natural or synthetic

Stearic Acid comes from Beef Tallow

Lanolin Alcohol is derived from animal matter

Oleic Acid - Derived from animal (beef or pork)

We hope this information is helpful!
