So, what's the real world like?

Hi all,

Would love to hear the experiences of the wise ones about life after the cocoon of University/college.

So, how is the post-college real world? Did college prepare you enough for it?

Thanks,
Chd

Hello Chd, well I would have to say that no, college doesnt prepare you - in much the same way that high school doesnt really prepare you for college. Its so very different but I have to say that college does give (most of the time) the poise, confidence and knowledge that you need to meet the challenge of a very different situation. Its like that for every major milestone in life i think. I had the big change from college to working world and then from professional to wife and mother. I have to say that the hardest, most challenging but most rewarding was learning to be a wife and mother - no amount of schooling can prepare you for that and the babies dont exactly come with a userguide!!

But seriously, if you met your challenge of successfully completing university, you can have the confidence that even though you're not fully prepared, you will be able to successfully meet the challenge of the "real" world.

depending on what you are studying and what university are you at. No institute can train you for every possible situation you may face but they give you sufficient foundation, and the ability to approach the situations.

My first job after grad school was in global syndications, never studied it in my life, but learnt on the job, however the finance foundation, as well as ability to evaluate, analyse, deal with ppl etc etc helped.

There are schools that just give the person a piece of paper and the curriculum is not designed to give them the right foundation, those are to be avoided.

college is a dream, a bubble, best time of one's life, carefree days, fun with friends, no worries about responsibilities, no pressures to make decisions....life in college is smooth sailing

real life aint bad either tho :) it doesnt have finals and midterms and homework and boring lectures atleast :D

and yeah i think my parents upbringing and college education alhamdulillah did prepare me for real life :) though i still got a lot to learn

it depends on whether the change

on a variety of factors, if youre college has a school-ish atmosphere or if its one of those huge ones where you lose yourself in the crowds

its all down to alot of factors, but i think its also down to the person. You. If you adapt easily then your better off than those who have problems with changing friends/colleges/universities etc etc

i am working since november and yaar i am missing university... college and uni were the great time of life,,, really miss all the people around there

This is not a universal fact. There are those who worked several jobs to put themselves thru school, sometimes while having other responsibilities as well. For them real world is a breeze, I know many people like that.
