For me, it is better to be bitten once and for all than bleeding slowly all the time. Hope government retains only nominal control of PIA with regulatory oversight.
Presiding over a meeting on the PIA at the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif directed the ministry of privatisation and civil aviation division to initiate the process of privatisation of the national flag carrier…
The PPP has announced that it would oppose any government move to privatise the PIA and Pakistan Steel.
Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah told his party’s workers on Wednesday that any attempt to put the jobs of thousands of people at the mercy of the private sector would be resisted…
why 26%? why NOT 100%? i think they should let the surplus staff which may amount to over 35%...they should hire people on merit...let the old corrupt employees go...they have milked PIA enough.
In those decades PIA was run on merit. But god forbid if you say that since Afat and Co. would show up harping about the correcting the historical wrong.

Why 26 %? Selling these shares the government will give management control to a private party. If they are able to turn the airline around, government will get 74 % of their profit.

Thats what the government assumed when they privatized KESC and PTCL earlier last decade. The saudi investor group that bought KESC wanted out within months of buying in. And PTCL, well, Etisalat still owes the govt close to $1 billion, reason being that Etisalat got more than what it bargained for.
Internal investors could be gifted PIA shares much like other PML-N era privatizations in the 90s.....and the govt will get some cash immediately...but I dont see profit flowing in any time soon. Any new management/ownership will have to get rid of the top heavy structure of PIA, which will be a tall order, specially with all the political appointments.

PIA and PTCL are different entities. If the government had not privatized PTCL, it would have turned into a white elephant by now. Even after privatization the organization had to face a stiff competition from competitors in a deregulated telecom environment. As far as PIA is concerned, it does not have a real competitor. If run efficiently the organization can make profit, but yes I agree with you that the process of privatization should be transparent (and not a means to placate some cronies).
Real chor uchakay phir ek bar lootnay ko tiar. Float tender in the international market, privatize 100% under the supervision of Transparency International if you are sincere to Pakistan. NS ki is tarah daka daalnay ki purani aadat hay kyon ke Pakistan in ke baap ki jaagir hay.

That would be the best scenerio.
Even if PIA is given to a chor uchakka at a low price, it would still be better than generals and jiyalas inflicting losses every day.

No. Tenders in international market under TI supervision. Privatize 100%. Don't play Abdullah Bin Ubai here. Don't want Mansha group or other dakoos, friends of NS to futher loot the country.

I wonder why no one thought about it in the past 5 years.
If international tenders do not happen, I still hope Mansha group does get PIA and runs it in the way they run other industries. At least people would get service they deserve. :P

Because it was only NS and co who think that all assets of Pakistan are thier 'baap ki jaagjir' and they are allowed to do whatever they want. If you really want marked improvement in national carrier, privatize 100% under Transparency International. let air lines like Singapore Airlines, Etehad, Emirate Air Line, Thi Air, JAL and all top air lines who are running in profit should participate and the winner should run PIA. They can also change this name PIA which has become bad omen for Pakistan.
^ Jiyalas gave PIA the bad name, looting it for years like their 'baap ki jaagir'. Its time for business people to loot a bit, but eventually benefits all Pakistanis instead of a few friends from jail or Lt Generals and Brigadiers.
PIA has to lower prices, up the standard of services to attract non Pakistani passengers around the world. i flew PIA to Delhi ONLY once and then realized their fares are much higher than other airlines but their services are lower than other airlines.
i would fly PIA if they correct the above two shortcomings.
