hmmm basic rules I live by, my big one is dont be a hypocrite-I wouldnt tell someone to do something or act a certain way if i wouldnt do it my self. Honesty, love, sincerity....

My cardinal rule is:
If I can find at least 3 things to be grateful about during any calamity in my life...its not as bad as it seems. I need to get over it and figure out what to do next.

I try to be moral, but not by any "given" set of rules. I guess I live by the Golden rule. I try to be honest to myself, which is the most difficult thing to do, I have found. I am good enough at it to have myself straightened out, but there is more there. Yeah, I guess that's about it.
You know this thread can come up with some pretty wise things, and some pretty wise rules everyone should try to live by.

Be myself, which is hard with a mom who has said she wishes she can erase you and make a mini her....didn't really bother me as much as it would have if I was younger though. I've gotten way past that stage where I try to do something to impress my parents since they never are. Second one if live my life the way I want to which is also hard when you're a girl in a strict family....

my rule is never do somethin that i can not admit doing in front of a crowd and a very good uncle of mine gave me this advice that if you have to convince urself to do something then don't do it ... and thats wat i follow

Agree; same here. Sometimes you have get the experience first before making up the rule. So, I make em/adjust as I go along.
The one rule I try to keep in mind (although I do slip up at times) is what goes around comes around. Another rule I try my best to follow is respecting people's privacy (not asking nosy/tactless questions because that irks me).
And I think that an interesting rule to try to work upon in general....would be to try not get too caught up in the"log kya kahain gay" fear and to consider individuality....n other factors that play into various situations. Regardless of culture/race....this can be a tough one for many people to follow.

My rules:
Don't worry too much about what others will think. Chances are, when the going gets tough, those "others" will abandon ship and leave you to clean up the mess without any help. Worry what Allah will think.
Mind your own business. Unless you're a parent or a spouse (and even in those relationships, there are boundaries), you do NOT have the right to know each and every detail of someone's life.
If you don't have something nice to say, keep your pie hole shut. It's not being honest or "standing up for what you believe in" if it's going to hurt someone's feelings. There's almost always a way to be honest and stand up for yourself in a respectful way.
