So what really is going on

musharraf declares emergency, boots out justices and clamps down on media
initial statements say he was going to delay elections, later reports show shaukat aziz sayiong polls will be as scheduled and on time, that is what is posted on BBC, does not appear CNN has heard that yet.

Benazir, is going to be on CNN tonight, she is moving about freely, and giving speeches.

Mixed statements from US, so Biden has had scathing words for Musharraf, so did Bill Richardson, but then he was ranked lower than stephen colbert the comedian just last week so I dont really think much of it. Part of it seems like using pkistan and Musharraf as a way for democrats to attack president Bush’s policies.

It does not make sense that Musharraf would take this action without approval from US leadership. Just a few weeks ago when the country was headed in same direction teh statements from US officials seemed to have halted that.

so what is happening now?

lets put the emotionally charged rhetoric aside for a second and evaluate the situation. present hypothesis of what happened and prediction of what we can see in coming days, weeks, months.

Hypothesis 1

the interests of a number of parties aligned

Musharraf’s election was not going to be accepted by Supreme Court because of eligibility
Benazir’s interests in getting indemnity from corruption charges in Pakistan and probably overseas were also looking damaged.
The US brokered relatuionship between benazir and musharraf was having hiccups.

my prediction 1-

US looks good by telling musharraf to have elections and he bows down, elections take place. benazir wins, or if not her one of her pals, yet she retains some important role basically keeping the power, kinda like Thatcher tried with Major..which did nto work out.

so Musharraf becomes more acceptable because he takes these ‘democratic’ measures. he will probably make some high profile moves in FATA in the next few weeks.

benazir comes in teh picture., her cases dropped, established as the hope of moderation in the region etc etc and an example.

UK and US leaders pat themselves on the back for a victory. case study for democratization on that part of the world, since the democracy in iraq cant really be used as a good resume builder

of course that prediction is based on the hypothesis 1, hypothesis 2 thru n will follow.

Re: So what really is going on

president Bush statemen excerpts

We expect there to be elections asap
Apresident to remove military uniform
Made it clear that emergency measures woud undermine democracy
Having said that I reminded the prime minister that Musharraf has been strong fighter against extremists and radicals
That he understands the dangers posed by radicals
After all they have tried to kill him three or four times
Our hope is that he will restore democracy as soon as possible

Re: So what really is going on

Yup I think you could be right. Musharraf wins, BB wins and the hard fought American-negotiated deal is back on track, after all impediments have been swiftly rmoved. I'm afraid idealists and PPP diehards will continue to believe the public statements of BB, but that is the hard reality of the world's real politik and Pakistani leaders.

Re: So what really is going on

although the situation has made strange bed fellows, anti musharraf mullahs and Bush are both asking for Musharraf to restore democracy on schedule :omg:

Re: So what really is going on

Does he allowed to wear something else or not

Re: So what really is going on

interesting observations. my two cents: benazir is not even close to having inside track to power. musharraf is beholden to his current allies who would not be supporting musharraf if they knew that musharraf had promised pm-ship to bb. my guess is that in return for cooperating with musharraf, bb will be allowed to contest elections without any obstacles. if she wins, she wins but that is not going to be easy because she is not popular in punjab. moreover, national elections results to a large extent are dependent local bodies which are heavily tilted in favour of pml. ppp has been demanding disbandment of local bodies which aint happening.

i also think the mush deal will bb is structered to prevent bb from having control of economic affairs. musharraf is aware of benazir's corruption but realises that when it comes to confronting jehadis. bb will display greater courage than that displayed by pml politicians. bb is cooperating with musharraf because she realises that without army's nod, she cant even live in pak. and wthout bb, ppp will be toast in the next elections. actions against ns and supreme court clearly indicates that army is the ultimate arbiter of power. other smart politicians like fazloo also realise the basic fact of pak politics and will come around to supporting musharraf. no party wants to spend years in wilderness which ultimately results in an unjaam that has fallen on the likes of the great khan and his buddies at j.i.

end of emergency will come after next elections when power will be divided at provincial lvl with ppp in sind, pml in punjab and jui in nwfp/baluchistan. as was the case in last elections, these parties will assume power after they indemnify musharraf's latest actions.

Re: So what really is going on

dont really care much about statements from bush or condi, yes ofcourse they were pre-warned by mush before he enforced the emergency, so their statements are just PR showshaw. ofcourse i have yet to read a statement from either UK or US political leaders where they have "condemned" this, they are only showing "grave concerns" and "deep concerns".

Re: So what really is going on

5Abi and that is what is interesting.
they are reviewing and are asking for shedding of uniform and elections on time. it almost appears that right now basically what was going to happen anyways is now being asked, i.e. him stepping into one role only, parliamentary elections, etc, but with this emergency situation now because it has been demanded teh demanders will look like foriegn policy heroes, he will reestablish/establish credibility, and people who were calling benazir a power hungry sellout may welcome her with open arms.

to change teh words of hazrat kurt cobain..

"smells like topi drama:

Re: So what really is going on

Re: So what really is going on
