Many people want to have a simple wedding. What makes it “simple”? Do you not call your close family & friends? Even if most of us call our close family & in-laws it would round up to approximately 150 guests, so how does it remain simple? Do you not serve them food? Do you not wear a new dress to your wedding?
I understand decore could be minimized, the location could have cost cuts, what else & how?

The simplest way(and most encouraged in Islam), would be to have a Nikah at the masjid with everyone who can come, then have a Walima lunch or dinner after that either at the Masjid, at a restaurant, in someone's lawn, a university meeting room, or a public community center. Since the venue would be free, you would only be paying for the food and maybe the Qazi who performs the Nikah. Additionally, there would be a small expense for the bride wearing a new simple outfit and the guy wearing a simple kurta/pajama. DONE!
Of course, having a wedding like that isn't what most people want and I think that's why most weddings aren't "simple" these days. But then again, "simple" is a relative term...what may be simple to me may be really extravagant to you and vice-versa.
I think when people talking about having a "simple" wedding they're referring to avoiding what they feel are "unnecessary expenses" or "extravagance." This could include big name hotels, fancy decor, entertainment, a menu that contains more food dishes than the average person will eat that night, a high-end photographer/videographer, designer clothes, etc. You don't "need" all those things to have a nice, elegant event. That's what keeping it "simple" refers to.
Too bad my fiance and I want all of those things, lol. To each his own. I think there are ways of having a "nice" wedding without overspending or spending beyond your means. But it's human nature to always want more, right? I respect the people out there who are able to keep it "simple" and stick to it. Props!
