I have read some articles about prison and seems like there are all these gangs and groups based on race which people associate with to protect themselves. Latinos have their own group, blacks have their own and so do whites. In prisons with large Asian population (as in Chinese, Japanese, etc) they have their own. So where do the desis fit in? They get beaten to pulp everyday?

If no West/South/Central Asians then I’d group with the Latino or Black Muslims (except NOI).

NOI are racist and Kaafir, or at least originally they were. I heard the group later reformed and joined mainstream Islam but I don’t know for sure.

No as far as I know, the Nation of Islam still are “racist and Kaafir” as you say. Lajjy-o here is right, their numbers are decreasing.
On the other hand, I heard about how Dave Chappelle decided to take a vacation from his show and “re-gain his faith” (following the Nation of Islam).
