So long as we are going back in time, lets rewind to 1974, when Gulbadin Hikmatyar (aka Jamaat-e-islami) was first brought in by Bhutto and Naseerullah Babar, to be trained against the big bad commy influence in Afghanistan. Zia was just responsible for continuing that policy, not starting it.

Naseerullah Babar was a serving Maj. Gen, who was heavily inclined towards politics. He was ordered by Bhutto to train Gulbadin Hikmatyar in 1974. Naseerullah resigned from the army soon after and joined PPP. No secrets, no lies. Dont ignore facts just because they dont suit the rosy image that is associated with Bhutto and clan.
Zia had his faults. He created headaches like the MQM and Nawaz Sharif. However, if you are old enough, you should be able to go back in time and figure out that the mujahideen, gun and drug culture had become the norm with the introduction of Gulbadin’s gang. Zia also had a soft spot for these thugs, and he is guilty of continuing support to these guys. But frankly, by the time he took over, the process was already on, and he had no choice but to continue, as CIA was already heavily involved and invested.
