The job of the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) was to convey the message that Allah had sent him (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) with. His (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) job was not to guide the people. Only Allah guides. That is why Allah says in the Qur’aan:

Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
**
[Quran 28:56]

Therefore, Allah told his Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) to turn away from the polytheists once he (sallalaahu alayhi wa sallam) had conveyed the message.

And He reassured His Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) that he (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) was not to be blamed as he (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) had done the job which he (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) had been given which was to convey the Message of Allah.

In these Verses is a lesson for us Muslims. The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) could not guide but only convey the message. If he (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) could not guide, then neither can we.

Our purpose is, thus, only to convey the Message of Allah, in the best manner possible, to those who do not believe.

As for guidance, then only Allah gives guidance to whom He Wills.

Tafsir Al-Tabari

The interpretation of the verse is** "Indeed you [can not] guide whom[ever] you like [meaning you are a guide] but Allah guides whom He wills [Allah guides and chooses them] And He is most knowing of the [inc those who will be] [rightly] guided.

**[Raad 13:7] The disbelievers say, “Why is not a sign sent down upon him from his Lord?” You are purely a Herald of Warning, and a guide for all nations.

[Shoora 42:52] And this is how We sent the divine revelation to you (O dear Prophet Mohammed - peace and blessings be upon him) - a life giving thing, by Our command; neither did you know the Book nor the detailed commands of religion, but We have made this Qur’an a light by which We guide whomever We will from Our bondmen; and indeed you surely do guide to the Straight Path.**
