so i setup my first AD domain

took an old P3-450 added 512mb ram, win2k serv, and setup an AD domain in 5 hours. hooked up a client as well. everything is good. setup up sharable folders, user drives mapped to the Z drive with offline files.. etc… RIS server as well.

what other cool stuff can i do?

I havent played around with group policy yet, but am interested in knowing how i can send program updates, installs, all through the server..

thanks

Re: so i setup my first AD domain

  • Deploy software with MSI Packages ( windows install packages )
( you have to go to Group Policy–> Computer Configuration–>Software Installation )
  • Apply all patches and service packs if u haven’t already.
  • set a WSUS server for WinUpdates to clients -
  • Harden the Server (Secure Windows 2000 server) & run MBSA to verify
  • Read all Group Policies… its very powerful
  • Check DNS and DHCP
  • Install Exchange Server if u have the CD.
  • Download win3k resource kits

Re: so i setup my first AD domain

What a waste of perfectly good hardware. Format the drive and install Gentoo or Fedora Core 4.

Re: so i setup my first AD domain

How about installing an SBS Edition of Win 2003 server, comes with Exchange & IIS.

Re: so i setup my first AD domain

Setup SUS (or the new one) and do patch management thru it.
