Femme, if I know of a job opening that aligns with the person’s qualifications, sure I can try.
But let me be honest, I would not be able to do as much as I could for people I know personally because in most cases I am helping ppl I know land jobs working with or for people who I know.
It is always tough when helping people one does not know personally, because when the question comes up ‘how do u know this guy’ its a tough answer.
The gentleman I placed at UN was my former mentor at Andersen, he was looking for a job and the person hiring at UN was a former boss of mine. when I recommended my mentor, the hiring manager asked me, how do u know him,.. I told him he was my senior colleague and my mentor, second question was, would you be willing to work with him/for him and my answer was, most definitely…etc etc. It becomes much tougher when I am recommending someone who I dont know, because my answer then becomes well I know someone who knows this person and I thought it was a good match (much weaker endorsement)
I just want to set expectations early on and while I may sound like an ass, I think its only proper and appropriate since it is my own credibility on the line with these people.
take FG case for example, I mean I kinda know him, but lets assume for a minute that FG was like a good pal and we knew each other well. If he tells me yes we are looking for ppl, I need to hire ppl in my team and my boss wants to hire ppl for other teams… If I am going to recommend someone to him, I have to make sure that I am watching out for FG as well and lay my cards on the table. If I place someone who later makes FG looks bad then I look bad to FG and my credibility gets shot.
so I will help, as much as I can and should. sorry for the long post, but I wanted to be clear in what I can and can not do.
