Did any of the kids bring in the Islamic factor?
Are you as a parent able to keep Halloween celebrations and your religion separate. Do you feel you’re going against Islamic rulings?
When is a good age to discourage children from trick or treating, buying costumes, if at all?
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
I had no sweets in the house so to stop them annoying me I paid them off… ![]()
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
Hubby had to work late and I was at my parents’ so my brother and I took Bunny out. She’s 22 months and this was her first time. She had a ball!
She was cranky this evening for various reasons, but once we got her outside, she was happy. For the first few houses she didn’t really understand what was happening, but dutifully carried her little bag as we walked to each house. She expected to be able to go inside. Even after getting some candy she just stood there and stared at the homeowners, making them feel awkward about going back inside. She also REFUSED to say trick-or-treat at most of the houses, though we did get her to say her thankyous at the later houses. Once she understood the pattern, she happily rang the doorbell, stood and waited, then grabbed some candy. Initially she put candy back in before taking more, which I thought was funny. Mamoon taught her “pumpkin” and she was running around and yelling “punkin!” every time she saw one. She was blowing kisses at the moon and at the ghosts
. Once she got the hang of trick-or-treating, she got a bit forward, taking a long time to decide which candy to take and changing her mind periodically (while lines of other trick-or-treaters formed behind her) and even once asking for “nother-one!” rather than politely saying thank you and walking away! ![]()
We had fun. ![]()
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
Did any of the kids bring in the Islamic factor? She's too young to bring up anything.**
Are you as a parent able to keep Halloween celebrations and your religion separate. Do you feel you're going against Islamic rulings?** I don't feel a conflict, but we never go out of the way to celebrate Halloween. I'll make sure there's candy for the trick-or-treaters, and I went trick-or-treating myself when I was younger, but we never spent tons of money and bought costumes. Most of it was stuff we put together from whatever was at home. Occasionally we'd buy face paint or a wig or something, but not usually. **
When is a good age to discourage children from trick or treating, buying costumes, if at all?** I would discourage the expense from day one, really. And also the fascination with horror. But I don't mind giving out candy and getting it. :D
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
One of our neighbors gives out freshly popped popcorn from his movie style popcorn machine instead of candy. The other neighbor gives hot chocolate. The place is so well decorated. People go all out!!
This year my girls said they didn't want to go as dad wasn't here. So we're home, waiting for the doorbell to ring :D
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
We went out. I consider ourselves moderate. We read namaz, send kids to Sunday school and say various duas before eating sleeping etc but at the same time I enjoy halloween as much as they do. I buy them costumes every year even if last year's fit! Nothing extremely expensive or anything but you get the picture. As long aswe are not praying to pagan gods I see nothing wrong with celeberating hallwoeen.
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
I left her bag of candy at my parents. I could really use a midnight snack! ![]()
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
My parents forbade us from ever celebrating Halloween.
My niece doesn't really bring up Islam. She is 4 now Mashallah. Her school came up with this really cute idea of "Halal-oween" where they got the kids to come by and trick or treat but no costumes. I guess its to discourage the dressing up but still let them have some fun with it.
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
^ I think Afshi has mentioned something similar. Cute idea.
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
That's pretty neat Reha!
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
what's wrong with dressing up?
the kid's too young to go trick or treating but he did dress up as an aviator. we were planning to order the star trek "kirk" baby costume but ran out of time. d'oh! so i put together his costume using things he already had in his closet and he looked super adorable, mA, if i say so myself! as fun as buying costumes can be, i think putting one together is even cooler. until he's of age to specifically request batman or transformers or what have you, i'll be making his costumes.
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
I went to the masjid last night where they had a Halal-oween program for the kids. There were games, dinner, cupcakes, cake and each child got to take home a loot bag fulll of candies. Around 50 kids showed up. Parents were also there as well. I would say it was successful.
**Did any of the kids bring in the Islamic factor?
**At the Islamic School where I teach, the Imam/Principal does tell the kids that halloween is haram and is a pagan/devil worshipping holiday. After hearing this, my cousin's son, who is around 9, decided that he didnt want to go trick or treating.
*Are you as a parent able to keep Halloween celebrations and your religion separate. Do you feel you're going against Islamic rulings?
* I did go when I was little, my parents had no idea what halloween was, but I never bought costumes or dressed up. I think hubby would be against the idea of our future kids going trick or treating and dressing up on halloween. But I think its fun to dress up, I wouldnt do it on halloween, but maybe have a costume party on their birthday or something.

**Hmm...I'm not sure.
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
We don't do Halloween so Misbah has never gone trick treatin ... but we give out candy to those who come to our door, have a little chit chat etc.

Afshi, I'm curious, were kids dressed up too?
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
Son was too little to take out trick or treating. Hubby and I really haven't talked about it but niether of us went trick or treating when we were younger so we don't think our kids will go either.
I will however get his some candy so he doesn't feel left out.
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
Halloween is totally haram . Those who dress up for it they will be adorned with dresses of fire and they will have to eat candy made of zarqoon , zarqoon is a very bitter plant in Jahannam.
My boys never dressed up but the princess did put a wig on and her moomani put some witch makeup on her. Moomani took her and her kid trick and treating around our neighbor hood. Me and wife gave out candy. Every year we have to buy double the amount of candy than the last year but it is never enough. ![]()
I guess that people from other subdivision came to our neighborhood for candy hunting. ![]()
The kids are told at Islamic school that Halloween is haram , but lure of candy and fun attached to it is more powerful then the Islamic school fatwa. Most kids believe that the present day Halloween is miles apart from pagan traditions and celebrated for fun not as a worship of devil , spirits , idols etc.
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
Afshi, I'm curious, were kids dressed up too?
nope. they are discouraged from wearing costumes to the masjid.
also i noticed that most of the parents that came were new immigrants families, and the concept of the halloween is foreign to them. They were not like you or me, adults that have grown up here in the west, did all that halloween stuff as kids and now would wnat our kids to do it.

Aww! That's so cute! I have been dressing up my kids since they were babies too.

Im surprised people still give out things like that, I thought for safety and hygiene purposes people only give and accept sealed/wrapped things?
I was reading an article in the paper a few days ago about how some people really make a huge deal of it. One man they interviewed spent almost $500 on treats to hand out and I think $200 on decorations! He said last year 750 kids came to his place and this year he was expecting at least 800!!!!
Re: So how many of you took the kids out to trick or treat?
Baby isnt here yet but I will not be taking my kids for trick or treating or doing costumes.. I dont like the concept behind it! I will prefer having something at the masjid like Afshi's but if it's not possible it's just one of those things where I will draw a line about what Muslims can or cannot do!
When?
As soon as they understand the concept of halloween.. just the way I will have to make an effort to explain why we dont eat pepporoni pizza, it will be the same for halloween! Who said raising kdis in west was easy but if I chose to do this, I shall be prepared!
PS: I know people who were celebrating halloween in Dubai and Paksitan yday.. beat that!
