Gold or buying cheap land in Pakistan?
Any ideas guys?
Re: So hang on to gold..or buy land in pakistan?
Would it matter if the land you bought had a secret gold mine inside it that you discovered after you bought it?
:)
Re: So hang on to gold..or buy land in pakistan?
Land sounds like a better option, but with all kinds of stories you hear about illegal occupation of land belonging to absent owners doesn't sound so encouraging.
Only buy land or property in Pakistan if you have a network of trusted and street smart people to keep an eye on it.

Agreed, have some people who could do this...my spouse's family. Then again they would know of better places to buy and to make a quick buck.
Re: So hang on to gold..or buy land in pakistan?
Another question quys.
In the case i wanted to sell gold, is it better to sell it in the UK or Pakistan? after all the taxes/vat etc???
Re: So hang on to gold..or buy land in pakistan?
I would be diversified. Gold is money. With the way the world is printing paper gold has no way to go but up. Farmland is currently the best land investment in my view. When there is inflation then both gold and farmland do really well.
Re: So hang on to gold..or buy land in pakistan?
What is Gold's track record vs other asset classes over the last 150 years?
Re: So hang on to gold..or buy land in pakistan?
Where do you live? Who is going go be taking care of that land?
I would say gold. The way Pakistani rupee is going down, any investment in Pakistan would actually devalue itself, if you look at it from Dollar perspective.

Im in the Uk but my spouse's family would be able to look after it. The intention is to keep the land for a few years..and then sell it for a profit!
Re: So hang on to gold..or buy land in pakistan?
^Technically speaking, there's no profit in buying/keeping/selling a land if you're abroad.
I'll give you an example.
10 years ago 1£ ==> 105 PKR
Now 1£ ==> 175 PKR
For instance you bought a land for 10,00,000 PKR(9523£) 10 years ago and now its value is 17,00,000 PKR(9714£) There's indeed a profit of 7,00,000 PKR but your base currency is £ and in that case nothing changed much.
Re: So hang on to gold..or buy land in pakistan?
I do believe that gold is a better investment at the moment. Buying land in Pakistan is not just full of risks but may also prove to be a bad option from ROI perspective.
I may be wrong but I say this from personal experience, we invested in one of those stupid schemes in Pakistan building awesome looking homes etc etc and 7 years later we still havnt got any form of completion on those homes. my uncle brought a plot of land and he too got duped coz there is some kabza group that took over that and a few other plots in the area ! My father wanted to sell the house in Islamabad and guess what , prices are sky rocketing , it didnt sell good enough either , it was a lot of hard work ..
So I really feel gold is a better option at the moment.

My personal take is, it's more useful and safe to invest in a holiday house in a proper residential area than just buy a piece of land and leave it there. For example, 1.5 kanal house that was built in Lahore DHA in early 2000s for Rs. 1.5+ million is now easily going for over Rs. 5 million, despite the bad economy, terrorism and a tense geopolitical situation. With residential properties, there's a always a chance of putting them in some use either by living there yourself whenever you are in the country or renting it before selling them, plus they're lot easier to manage.
Investing in overseas has it's advantages and risks, a lot of patience, dedication and chasing around goes into such things. To secure some peace of mind and success rate, you must always go check the ground realities, do your homework and ensure that you are the one leading the entire process, not friends and relatives. My father always says, when it comes to matters like land, property and inheritance, don't even trust your own brother. Well not exactly, but you got the point, lol.
Re: So hang on to gold..or buy land in pakistan?
Why focus on only one avenue? Make diversified portfolio.
REITs aren't as established as the stock market and mutual funds. So its better if you invest in some small plot of land.
Other option is to invest in equity mutual funds and now there are Gold funds as well. But with Gold it doesn't make much sense to invest in paksitani gold per se..since gold prices are driven internationally.
Better to have a mix of equity mutual fund and land.
