Odd question, I know, but has anyone been to Orlando recently, and has anyone had any trouble getting bun kababs hidden in an oversized purse in through security?
If so, were you afforded the opportunity to place the bun kababs back into the car for consumption later in the evening, or were you asked to throw them out into the garbage can.
LOL umm I can't believe I'm answering this but it sort of depends on the theme park you'll be visiting. Sea World is laid back and once or twice we have even managed to sneak in some biryani but Disney isn't.
They will always give you the chance to take it back to your car for your little desi feast later on.
Water bottles are also normally allowed.
Honestly though, it's much easier to sneak in food during peak season. They just peek into your purse real quick and don't bother with a thorough check.
As long as you're not bringing in coolers with food, you should be fine. We were at Epcot in December and had no problem bringing in sandwiches and drinks. The security took a peek in our bags and didn't say anything.
Why do desis have to be cheapskates wherever they go? Be it cinemas (yes, it happens) or theme parks.
We're not being cheap. They're the ones who are gouging. Once we smuggled a bottle of coke in a restaurant. The restaurant was selling 355 ml cans for a dollar each. My brother smuggled in a 2 liter coke bottle for us and it only cost us $2.
Its not the matter of being cheap. Sometimes its hard to find something halal and food-court employees in such parks (normally part time students) does not have much information about the ingredients of food. So while a gora family can feed whole family for $3 hot dog on almost every corner, muslims normally have to travel from one corner to another to find something to eat.
We always keep some snacks in out hand-bag (like cheese sandwich or packs of chips or samosas etc) so we can feed the kids whenever they feel like instead of asking them to wait for hour more so we can go back to food court to find something hahal.
We never had problem taking snacks and water bottles into the park. Never tried carrying soda though.
I've never really tried to take anything but water into the parks in Orlando so I wouldn't be able to say but I know someone else that used the "no halal food here" card and they were advised that there is no rule against leaving the park at lunch to eat and then coming back in. Even this option would be good except that the car park is always so far and the children would be exhausted just going back and forth.
Can't we start a petition asking these parks to start carrying halal food?
not sure about US parks but I am sure this is not far fetched for Ontario parks. Just like almost all the grocery stores have started sections of Halal meat, soon these Parks will start selling halal item or two
way to go :k:
Calling all Muslims to increase their family sizes if they want Halal food
I don't know about the US but can't you always have vegetarian food? In the UK, if all else fails there's always fish and chips!
Variety in vegetarian food is limited in the US.
In Ontario, Canada you are more likely to find an alternative, as DC6 confirms above, but in the US.....not so lucky. Especially not in theme parks where hot dogs, burgers and pepperoni pizza is the norm.
We always sneak in drinks but thats about it unless we have young kids with us then we'll sneak in some snacks.........we always have to do the long walk back to our cars and eat in the parking lot
we usually sneak in drinks and chips and just small things last time we went to wonderland my brother snuk in a bottle of pepsi in both of his jean pockets no one even noticed
It's not about just Desis being cheap. If you look around the parking lot around lunchtime, you see people from all parts of the world.
Generally it's just bad bad quality food/fast food only and very expensive. Maybe it's okay if you're on a once-a-year family vacation but most of these parks sometimes offer year round passes and if you're a local resident going there with an entire family on a regular basis , then it becomes very expensive. A bottle of water is 5 bucks! Why not pay a dollar instead if you can?
Universal studios offers this day food pass thing over summers only and you pay around 20 bucks for food all day long. Once we went for it and ended not even eating anything. It's just sub par fast food quality. They have vegetarian options like cheese pizza, vegetarian burgers but those are just gross and greasy.
Snacking is okay but for the regular food part, we usually go out to eat or have something home-cooked in the car already. More affordable and healthier. At least you're not paying 5 times the price for McDonalds like food.
Like mentioned, there are no halal options either and makes it more difficult. Even cheese pizza slices are normally already pre-cut and I'm always iffy about the knife it was cut with (in case they use the same knife to cut pepperoni pizzas).
6 Flags offers once a year Muslim Day in California every year. That's always fun cuz they have halal kfc and biryani/haleem and we normally save our 6-Flags trip for that day.
