Smoky Mountains Tips

Or Blue Ridge Mountains, please advise must see or do in these areas. So far I know of Luray Caverns.

What about hiking, What are good scenic but kid friendly trails. What else is there that is a must?

Plan to go end of October during peak fall foliage. Thanks.

PS. I have read online about there being lots of black bears. How likely are you to run into them when your out in the mountains taking in the scene or hiking?

Re: Smoky Mountains Tips

Bear attacks are rare, they attack if they get startled so make lots of noise on the trail, bear bells and spray are recommended, normally trails have lots of people and bears like to avoid people.

Re: Smoky Mountains Tips

A really good and economical hotel to stay at is:

Super 8
1410 Winfield Dunn Pkwy, Sevierville, TN 37876

You virtually get two rooms for the price of one there. Its about 15 mins drive from downtown Gatlinburg.

I once encountered a family of wild black bears on a trail there but they were busy munching food. Use basic precautions which are available on park's site. There is a huge theme park(Dollywood) with rides on the road approaching the park. Nothing extra ordinary but definitely fun for children and adults alike.

If you have kids in stroller, I don't think there is any trail for that. Many sites however can be visited by sitting in the car plus little walk. If you do wanna hike, consider 'Chimney Tops' trail. Its not too long nor too difficult and lots of families do that one. Definitely spend plenty of time walking the Gatlinburg downtown in evening.

Re: Smoky Mountains Tips

Black bears aren't the ones you have to worry about.
