Smoking with Kids

What do you think of people who smoke while driving with their kids? Or ask for a smoking room when looking for a room in a hotel? I mean either it is the addiction or height of irresponsibility. One cannot just go and give them a lecture on parenting, but it always amazes me when parents with their kids who are very young choose to smoke in front of them or near the vicinity.

Re: Smoking with Kids

I don’t think very much of anyone who smokes infront of ANY other people let alone their kids!
**I mean,…its one thing smoking in public, where you don’t know half the people who are going to be affected by that smoke, and its another thing knowing that you’re smoking while you’re around your own kids and that they are going to be inhaling that smoke. **
:bummer:

Re: Smoking with Kids

i think if people really knew how smoking messes you up inside out and see people who are hooked on to these machines for every single breath they take they will QUIT! let alone the irresponsibility and addiction

Re: Smoking with Kids

smokers have rights too, and unless illegal, if they are smoking publically that is their business. I mean if a guy is sitting and smking at a bench in the park, you dont have to go sit with him or stand around him.

Yes I am aware of teh dangers of second hand smoke and what nots.

I recall when I was an on and off smoker, I asked specifically for a smoking seat in the plane, I got a smoking seat. I sat there and smoked like others were doing, until this guy 2 rows ahead of me first complained to the stewardess, and then came yelling at us that we cant smoke in a non smoking section, to which I casually showed him the boarding card that showed that indeed this was a smoking row. He went away and then came back screaming that is daughter has asthma and my smoking is bothering her.

I extniguished the cigarette immediately and did not smoke at my seat the rest of the flight. I did give him a lecture that if he just had told me the first time, I would have stopped then, but being all bossy and all would is not the way to go about it. He wanted a non smoking seat, I wanted a smokign seat, we were both right, the airline just did not factor in this type of situation, so rather than calling us names and all, if he just acted in a civilized manner instead of trying to just push us around eh would have had instant resuts. I mean the goal is not to make people miserable, no intention to hurt the kid. airlie offered smoking seats, I asked specifically for those because I wanted to smoke. dude should have asked for a seat as far away from the smoking section as possible knowing is kid’s condition or should have asked politely

Then smoking was banned from flights, no big deal, airlines wanted to protect

and now i am on the other side, I dont smoke, begum gets sick if there is smoke around. so in retaurants I make sure to tell pp to seat me as far away from the smking section as possible. Because as much as we are anti smoking, the facility allows smoking, there is a specific smoking section, it is not he smokers fault for smoking in the smoking section, but the retaurants fault for not having the right split or not having good enough ventilation etc.

As a former smoker, i feel for smokers who are treated like a pariah. I mean let the guy kill himself, its his business, no one is stopping you from stuffing donuts and bacon down your throat either, a smoker has a right to smoke in a smoking section as much as he wants. Getting holier than thou and in people’s face is not going to solve anything. Sometimes asking politely does wonders. The gentleman in my airline story would have been much better off had he come over and asked me nicely the first time that my smoking was affecting his kid and to not smoke.

and if it bothers u so much, dont go to establishments where smoking is allowed or teh section si so close that it bothers you, thats what I do now. or lobby to get smoking banned from the establishments. Until then respect the right of the smokers to smoke, they are not breaking any law.

Re: Smoking with Kids

i know wot u mean. I was never a smoker and dont plan to smoke in the future either but i get really pissed off at all these anti smoking organizations who are trying to act like society's parents. They want smoking banned from all public places and want smokers to move away from buildings when they want to smoke. You see the poor fellows all huddled up in corners in -20 degree cold.

People have successfully pushed the government to legislate mandatory labels on the smoking packs which show u the most disgusting pics which supposdly are results of smoking and warn u of the dangers of smoking. Thats just ridiculus. I mean the guy's in the smoking business are there to make money and these idiots are practically telling them to prevent ppl from buying their product. I dont care if they ban the smoking industury all together, but trying to ruin their business while taking in bags of money in tobacco taxes is just hypocritical.

And here are my two cents about the topic of the thread.
I think those parents are either ignorant of the harms of second hand smoking or they dont give a damn about their kids. Education is the key. They should be educated of the harms they knowingly or unknowingly are putting teir children in. but governments should not jump in and start legislating their behaviour. i mean smoking is not the only harmful thing for kids. Taking them to Mcdonalds or buying them loads of candy is also not gud. would we like governments to legislate wot we can or can't feed our children. i mean where does this stop?

Re: Smoking with Kids

I think ppl who smoke with their kids in the car etc are very irresponsible.

as far as designated smoking areas and all, I am all for it, have people smoke away from teh blds whatever, it is a nuisance to others and it does have impact on others' health, but if the dude is smoking ina designated smokign area..let him be.

Re: Smoking with Kids

You guys do have valid points actually. :)

Re: Smoking with Kids

I am x smoker, but I feel that we take thing sometimes way too much. Smokers have right too. Live with it.

Re: Smoking with Kids

I agree smokers have right to smoke, they are adults can choose what they want to do with their lives.

What is the right of kids? Just because they are parents does not mean government can leave it alone. I think they should have laws where smoking in car with kids should be banned, a law where parents are not allowed to ask for a smoking room in a motel, if they are accompanying a kid, just like using cell phones while driving is banned...

Re: Smoking with Kids

^ thats all nice and gud but where does this parent government stop? government interference with ppl's life should be a minimum. on the one hand we have ppl crying all over the world because their governments control all aspects of their lives and on the other, ppl who enjoy all kinds of freedoms want a more regulated life.

Re: Smoking with Kids

It is not a matter of personal interference, rather public health. If they can interfere with drunk driving (another case where you drink in your own car your business), they can they do the same here. I am not suggesting government to ask for their name address and personal information, just ban smoking in cars when you are driving with kids.

Re: Smoking with Kids

but im sure people are damn sensible enough to realise that they shouldnt smoke in front of their kids

i mean it’s not that hard for them to just WAIT a little while…then go outside or away frm the lil ones to have a ciggy

Re: Smoking with Kids

they should make it illegal to smoke in public places...infact they should stop making cigs..

Re: Smoking with Kids

^ that is takin it too far....heard of cold turkey?

they should make cigs. but not allowed to smoke in public places

Re: Smoking with Kids

Salam,
so for the 'guy' who wants to smoke in the apt section of restaurant etc. is he ok if he is dining alone...and if he has his children is he still entitled...or non-smoking wife guests etc...how does it work then?

n.b. also ppl may remain seated in designated smoking areas... but the smoke doesn't

Re: Smoking with Kids

:frowning: me too…
but knowing ciggs contain incredibly dangerous chemicals many of which are carciogenic is like saying ppl might get cancer, bronchitis, asthma etc. and if they do it doesn’t mean it was caused by ciggs.

its a bit of a ‘cop out’ when a smoker demands rights but doesn’t think it is fair to b told to exercise responsibility with that right.

what do u think?

we expect it of drinking, owning a deadly weapon, even learning martial arts, why should smoking b exempt?

n.b. though it isn’t enforced here smoking at least while driving is banned…but 4 the driver only.

Re: Smoking with Kids

Mr. Fraudia & Chacha Ghalib have valid points. I agree with them.
