Smoking - Haram or Halal

Is smoking considered haram or halal?
Is hurting yourself intentionally considered halal? Its pretty obvious that smoking has this impact.

Is there a level of hurt you can inflict on yourself before the activity you are engaged in is considered haram - like if you are involved in a sport (lets say boxing) where you know that you have the potential of being hurt (even fatally)?

What about smoking pot? Which drugs are permissible, or any of them permissible? If cigarrettes are permissible, than why not marijuana, why discriminate?

Evidence for the Prohibition of Smoking
There are many reasons, any one of which aufficient to rule smoking prohibited. Most importantly, it is harmful in numerous ways. It is harmful to the Deen, health, environment, family, brotherhood and social relations, property, etc. The following sections will briefly outline some of its harms and evils.

Haram To The Deen
Smoking spoils a person's acts of worship and reduces their rewards. For instance, it spoils the prayer, which is the pillar of Deen. Allah's Messenger said: Whoever eats garlic or onion, let him avoid us and our masjid, and stay in his home. The angels are surely hurt by things that hurt the human beings(1)

Those with clean and undefiled fitrah (nature) have no doubt that the smell emanating from the mouth of a smoker is worse and more foul than that from the mouth of one who ate garlic or onion. Thus, a smoker is in between two options, either to harm the praying people and the angels with his foul smell, or miss the prayer in jama'ah.

Smoking also spoils fasting. Fasting is very hard for the smoker. As soon as the day is over, he hastens to break his fast on an evil cigarette instead of sweet dates or pure water. Even if he fasts through the month Ramadan, a smoker is reluctant to fast on other days. Thus he loses the great reward of those who fast even one day in Allah's way.

Harm To The Human Body
No one can deny the harm of smoking to the human body. The medical evidence for this is well established and overwhelming. Because of this, the law in the United States and many other countries requires including a warning on any smoking advertisement.

Smoking contains poisonous materials, such as nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, arsenic, benzopyrene, etc., that the smoker swallows in small proportions. Their harm accumulates with time to result in a gradual killing of the human organs and tissues.

The hazards of smoking to the health are hard to enumerate. Cancer, tuberculosis, heart attacks, asthma, coughing, premature birth, infertility, infections in the digestive system, high blood pressure, nervousness, mouth and teeth diseases, etc., are among the many health hazards that have been strongly linked to smoking.

These diseases may not appear all at once, however a smoker is most likely to suffer from some of them, and his suffering increases as he grows older. Furthermore, statistics have established that smokers' age is, on the average, ten years less than other people's.

This is aufficient to prohibit smoking. Islam prohibits any action that causes harm to oneself or to other people. Allah (T) says (what means):

<>(2)

<>(3)

And the Messenger says: No harm may be inflicted on oneself or others.(4)

The feet of a human being will not depart, on the day of Judgement, from his standing before his Lord, until he is questioned about five things: his lifetime - how did he pass it, his youth - how did he used it, his wealth - where did he earn it and how did he spend it, and how did he follow what he knew.(5)

Whoever consumes poison, killing himself with it, then he will he consuming his poison in the hellfire, and he will abide in it permanently and eternally.(6)

Harm To The Mind and Will Power
Smoking is harmful to the human mind and reason. An obvious demonstration of this is that one who is addicted to it passes through periods of severe craving, making it hard for him to think, concentrate, solve a problem, or do any important matter, until he smokes.

When one smokes, his muscles slacken, and he passes through a brief period of delirium that curtains the thought. His digestive system is also affected, causing him frequent nervousness and trembling of the hands. He passes through periods of excitability, in itation, and insomnia.

Thus, instead of being Allah's slave, a smoker becomes slave to his cigarette. He develops a weaker control of his sense and reason. The faculty of reason, clear and unobstructed, is one of Allah's great bounties on people. He (T) praised it in numerous places of the Qur'an; and He called on people to use it to see the truth and obey Him in a better way. Allah wants of the believer to be strong and capable of controlling the reigns of his desires. He (T) said (what means):

<>(7)

Harm To The Environment
A smoker emits his poisons in the faces of his companions, wife, children, and the environment. It is well established that second-hand smoke is almost as dangerous as first-hand. Thus, whether they like it or not, a smoker's associates are forced to inhale the smoke and be themselves smokers as well.

In addition to the poisons normally carried in the smoke, if a smoker has an contagious disease, such as tuberculosis or influenza, his exhaled smoke and coughing carry the disease to those around him.

Furthermore, a smoker irritates people by the foul smell and poisonous nature of his smoking. If they suffer from asthma or allergies, they are forced to move away from his vicinity. The Prophet () said: Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should not hurt his neighbor.(8)

Thus, smoking constitutes a definite harm to other people; this is prohibited, as was indicated in the hadith cited earlier.

Also, a smoker is certainly a bad companion to sit with, as is depicted in the following hadith:

Verily, the example of a good companion and a bad one is like that of a perfume merchant and a blacksmith: As for the perfume merchant, he would either grant you (some perfume), or you would buy (some perfume) from him, or (in the least) you would get a good smell from him. And as for the blower of the bellows (ironsmith), you would either get a foul odor from him, or he would burn your clothes.(9)

Harm To The Property
A smoker wastes his wealth on that which harms and has no benefit; he will be asked about his wealth and how he spent it, as has been cited in the hadith earlier. His wealth belongs to Allah, so how would he dare to waste it in disobedience to Him? Allah (T) says (what means):

<>(10)

<>(11)

And the Prophet () said: Allah hates for you three things: gossiping, begging, and wasting money.(12)

Furthermore, there are numerous cases of burnt carpets, furniture, and even complete houses and establishments that have resulted from this disastrous vice.

Moral Decadence
Smoking is a form of moral decadence. It is most spread among the low-class immoral people. It reflects blind imitation of the non-Muslims. It is mostly consumed in bars, discos, casinos, and other: places of sin. A smoker may beg or steal if he does not have the money to buy cigarettes. He is ill-mannered with his friends and family, especially when he misses taking his necessary "dose" at the usual time.

Evil Substance
Smoking involves the consumption of an evil substance (khabeeth). It has a foul smell, foul taste, and is harmful to the body. This is aufficient to: prohibit it, because Allah (T) says (what means):

<<(The Prophet) who will enjoin upon them the doing of what is right, forbid them the doing of what is wrong, make lawful to them the good things of life, prohibit for them the evil things, and lift from them their burdens and the shackles that were (previously) upon them.>>(13)

Resembling The People Of The Fire
A smoker inhales the smoke that does not give him any nourishment. This is similar to the action of the people of the Hell fire who eat harmful thorny plants:

<>(14)

Bad Example
A smoker, whether he likes it or not, makes of himself an example for his children and others to follow. He leads them to commit this evil. Actions sometimes have a stronger effect than words. Thus, even if he advises them or forbids them from smoking, his partaking of it provides them with a strong excuse to do it.

The problem is worse when the smoker is of known piety or knowledge. In such case, his harm becomes more emphasized, because more people take him as guide and example, and are thus lead astray by him. This multiplies his sins and increases his burden.

Hostility Toward The Good People
The majority of good people avoid smoking and stay away from smokers. Therefore, a smoker would be forced to stay away from them - at least while he smokes. He puts himself in a selective exile, creating a spiritual distance and hostility between him and the good people, and a closeness to the evil people. The effects of this become more apparent and acute with time. Note that this applies equally to any sin that a person commits, small or large.

Low Self Esteem.
A smoker despises himself, because he feels that a little cigarette is controlling him. Realizing his weakness before desires, this creates in him a feeling of defeat in the face of hardships.

I hope this answers

TO WHAT HEIGHTS CAN I NOT RISE

[This message has been edited by hallian (edited December 09, 1999).]

Thanks those are all excellent points. I think I posted this question, because I would like to know if there is a difference in opinion on different drugs...I'm just being the devils advocate here, I'm not trying to legitimize anything that isn't legitimate, just trying to understand something...

I realize smoking ciggarettes is harmful to your health. But smoking marijuana has negligble impacts on your health and may in fact be 'good' for your health, in small quantities. Marijuana doesn't smell bad, in fact its odor can be appealing. If it were more readily accepted, than its use in furninshing other 'hemp' and hemp related products would increase - in fact helping the environment and reducing the cutting down of forests. It isn't expensive, unless it is illegal, you can grow your own at a cheap cost. I don't think it should be smoked by younger adolescents who are developing into adults, but I think at a certain stage in your life, when you are responsible, you can make a choice to smoke it or not. I don't think it contributes to any terrible social ills.

I think alot of your points apply to any drug use, but I think there maybe some room for a counter-argument.

Achtung

About alcohol, Allah SWT states in the Quran that it is harmful for the most part, even thought there might be some minute benefit to its consumption, based on which shaitan will try to entice you towards it.But dont touch it, since its been declared haram, despite the fact that it might have a small benefit to you. This is not the exact translation, but this is what the verse says. I will look up the verse and post it, but basically, what it says is that despite having small benefits, it will eventually do more harm than good. Same goes for marijuana. Scientists might argue about medicinal marijuana or alcohol reducing the risk of heart attacks, but whats forbidden is forbidden, and the little good it does is not a reason for us to start using it, for whatever purposes it might be.

Alright Akif, that makes complete sense. That is a straightforward, logical argument. Now I have to bring it back to the question of smoking cigarettes, why do some schools of thought permit it? Why don't these same schools of though permit smoking marijuana? The relative addictiveness of marijuana is less than that of nicotine...

Or do you believe both are prohibited. And what does that say for Muslim countries, where a large number of the population (especially the young) are taking up the habit of smoking cigarrettes.

Achtung

I dont know why you guys waste your time and write soo long posts...but look at it this way....Smokinggg is waste of money right? its FAZOOL kharchi? so in islam fazool kharchi or spending of money without any purpose is haram in islam. Even spending time like playing games which waste time and keep us from praying are haram in islam.

Jaawan

Till next time*K_I_S_S*

Jawaan, How about reading posts on GupShup? Is that not time consuming? Is that haraam? Let's not twist Islam for the sake of proving a point. Drugs alter your mind state, that's what makes it haraam, we have to be in a position to be able to distinguish right from wrong at all times, and drugs, including marijuana, impair that judgement.

Surah Baqara..ayat # 219
"They ask you about intoxicants and games of chance. Say: In both of them there is a great sin and means of profit for men, and their sin is greater than their profit. And they ask you as to what they should spend. Say: What you can spare. Thus does Allah make clear to you the communications, that you may ponder"

Achtung...I dont think there is any school of thought that 'permits' smoking. I just think that there is a general level of tolerance because of the fact that it is so common and generalized. We can say the same about so many other evils that are actually haram, yet are committed by muslims on such a rampant basis that people have become tolerant of them, like lying, cheating, bribery, backbiting. All these acts are haram for muslims, yet you will never see anyone being taken to task for backbiting, something which has been equated to eating the flesh of ones dead brother. Smoking, i conclude from the above verse, is haram in Islam, whether its a nicotine cigarette, or a marijuana joint. Whether it gives u a 5 second high feeling, or a 5 hour high, an intoxicant is an intoxicant. The fact (?) that marijuana is less addictive compared to nicotine doesnt make it any better. Its just the lesser of the two evils, and still would be haram.

asalaam o alaykum to all-
ramadhan mubarik :)

In response to Achtung's quiry, 'hallian' posted some very informative passages. Most of the members second them, while few dont. It would have been helpful if 'hallian' would've posted hadith references as there are many false hadith flying around also. Also he should be more clear as to what he posted was what he himself authored or copied and pasted from somewhere. I am not challenging his scholarship, but just trying to ascertain, if he/she personaly believes on what he reads around.

let us approach the topic as follows.

The basic principal of Islamic teaching is that whatever is contributive to halal/haram is iteself halal/haram. By this it means that Islam opens/blocks all areas leading to halal/haram. Say for example, sex is haram, so it prohibits dirty material, free mix up of both sexes, depiction of nudity, and so on. But sex is not only perfectly allowed in a marraige, but it encourages one to have as much one like, with one's lawful spouce. My point is when Islam prohibits something, it provides alternative, which is better. another example which readily comes to mind is pork. Islam prohibited it, but does not compell you to become a vegitarian, but allows arrays of other meats.

With that principal in mind, smoking tobacco is harmful to health and wealth, in any shap or form and the consumption of such material, be it cigarrattes, cigars, birries or whatever is harmful.

The question then arises, if this is haram? It does not intoxicate, so it is not khimr. It does not impair judgment, ( I beg to differ with hillian's finding, as many great scholars of this world were chain smokers )Besides, what is haram is clearly mentioned in Qura~n, and what is haram is even more clearly warned. Prophet Mohammad, swaw, said:

"The zealots will perish", 'repeated three times' (Muslim, Ahmad and Dawood)

Waterpipes, were in great use in older times, If smoking was haram, it would have clearly/openly prohibited. It is harmful, yes, so could it be makrouh (?) I dont know.

And now about splif (it is a street name for marijuana, where I live). Modern medical has proved that such practice is helpful in some health matters. Like eye sights, I think. It gives a wonderful feeling, which is clearly different than liquir or any other drug. It does not impair one's judgment, instead it helps one to concentrate on issues with more intensity. I sound like advocating it. :)But honestly, I dont know. It is also not mentioned clearly. It comes naturaly. It is not derived by khimr process. No fermentation etc... I mean. As this is clearly prohibited in Qura~n. Doubtful, yes maybe.

But guess who gets the benefit of the doubt.

May Allah forgive me if I have said anything which is wrong and may you all who read this, study and consult others who are more knowledgeable than me before taking up anything. I DID NOT INTEND TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO SMOKE MARUJUANA. I was just expressing my point of view, which I agree may be wrong.

It does not intoxicate, so it is not khimr.>>
If cigarettes dont intoxicate, what do they do :)A person who smokes 2 packs a day cannot let go of the habit overnight, which tells u that he is addicted. And addiction is derived from intoxication.

Modern medical has proved that such practice is helpful in some health matters. Like eye sights, I think. It gives a
wonderful feeling, which is clearly different than liquir or any other drug. It does not impair one's judgment, instead it helps one to concentrate on issues with more intensity.>>

Allah SWT has already said that in the Quran, surah Baqarah, ayat 219 which i quoted above. Intoxicants do have some benefit, but their sin far exceeds their benefit.
It might be a controversial issue for some, but smoking has more than a few aspects that negate Islamic teachings, like hallian quoted in his post, and I believe thats more than enough to caste it as a doubtful practice. And for doubtful practices, Muslims have been advised by Prophet SAW to always take the safe route and avoid it if in doubt. Its not as if there is no alternate for marijuana as a medicine. However, i too believe that the subject is open to debate.

Thanks Baykhatar, you should come over to my place and we can light up a splif. Do you think its ok to smoke one in Ramadan (after Iftar of course)?

Akif if smoking is is haram, is selling cigarettes also haram? What does that say for all of the Muslim convenience store owners (living in the west) who sell intoxicants for a living, and continue to do so (even durin Ramadan, is there fast nullified?), in addition to those in the Muslim world...

Achtung

Achtung..
Like i said, it is open to debate. However, i am personally very strictly against smoking, but that doesnt constitute a declaration of it as haram, since I am no aalim by any means. Muslim convenience store owners have a lot of other things to worry about before we talk about them selling cigarettes....like selling alcohol and lottery tickets..things that we can agree on as being haram, since Allah has said so in the Quran. And yes, those who do sell these items not only nullify their fasts, they taint their income as well, and income derived from haram sources is haram too. About cigarettes, Im no authority, but i do believe it is equivalent to any other intoxicant, and it carries the same sin as others. An evil is an evil, whether small or large.

Achtung......a sheyr, in response to your invitation

mehfile wa'aiz tou ta dayr rahay gi kaaim
ye hai maikhana chalu pi kay chalay aatay hain

one day, inshaAllah. Thanks again. You know there is one school of thought, sufis, who permit, privately, for such perception.

Smoking according to the HANAFIS is makrooH.

Baykhatr Sufis do not allow the smoking of Marijuana if that is what you mean!! And it is not a school...

Asif:

What is behind the Hanafi ruling, making smoking makrooh? Why is it not haram?

I've been told that some Sufi order's do permit the smoking of marijuana.

What I'm wondering is, why is smoking allowed (by Hanafi's) but marijuana not...whats the difference that allows for this discrepancy. Both seem to do some harm to your health.

Achtung

There are different schools of thought on whether smoking is halal or not, but I tend to go with the opinion that it is mubah (no opinion on it). I have seen some very religious scholar types smoking and I guess they would know better than me.

As for the spliff argument, I would be surprised to hear that this is allowed and I am talking as someone who used to indulge in my wilder days. It definitely befogs the mind, important issues and people tend to take a back seat while that joint seems to take on magical properties. I'm glad I put that behind me.

Even alcohol can be used for medicinal purposes but recreational use is not a good idea. Doesn't matter if it is good or bad for the health (and maijuana definitely affects the memory and for all we know might be causing drip-drip deteriotion of the brain.

Its saddening that when an argument in the form of word of Allah SWT is presented, people ask for proofs and explanations, and when something is presented from a western researcher, we believe it without blinking. So for anyone who has doubts about marijuanas harmful effects, here u go.
From CNN.com

WASHINGTON (Reuters) --
Smoking marijuana can cause cancer, California researchers said Friday, and aging baby boomers who have been indulging since the swinging 60s may just be starting to feel its ravages.
The report, by Dr. Zuo-Feng Zhang of the Jonsson Cancer Center at the University of California Los Angeles, adds to evidence that smoking cannabis can have cancer-causing effects similar to those linked to cigarette smoking.
"Many people may think marijuana is harmless, but it's not," Zhang said in a statement. "The carcinogens in marijuana are much stronger than those in tobacco. The big message here is that marijuana, like tobacco, can cause cancer."
Writing in the journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarker and Prevention, Zhang said he studied 173 patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer, and compared them to 176 cancer-free control patients.
Those who said they habitually smoked marijuana were more likely to be in the group with head and neck cancers. And the more they smoked, the bigger the risk.
"If you smoke a little, your risk increases a little," Zhang said. "If you smoke a lot, your risk increases a lot."
He said pot-smoking baby boomers should be on the lookout for symptoms of head and neck cancer, also very common in cigarette
smokers and heavy drinkers.
"In the '60s, we had very high numbers of people in their 20s smoking marijuana," Zhang said. "These people are just now getting to the ages at which they will get head and neck cancers."
/bold Earlier this year, the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences reported that marijuana could have some medical uses, notably to treat pain for some terminally ill patients.
But the committee said pills using the active ingredients in marijuana were a safer alternative because smoking marijuana can cause cancer, lung damage and babies with low birth weights in pregnant women. /bold
