Whenever you vacum first sprinkle a carper freshener (glade, arm and hammer) - they are very cheap and it helps the carpets to smell better.
I don't know but some of the replies here are pretty paranoid. I know some cases are real bad and need desperate measures but as every good chef knows that good food which is cooked properly have aroma that is appitising. Like if you bake cake or pastries, smell of vanilla or cinnamon fills the home. Similarly in french or Italian cooking we use herbs and cheeses which give a sweet aroma to food.
In desi cooking also if you cook the food properly the smell issue shouldn't be a problem. The bothersome deep masala smell which lingers around is due to dry or oil roasting of masala or strong tarka. Use water when roasting the masala and always use an exhaust fan. But again good food have to smell good too and if you cook baryani and someone has to ask whats for dinner then it is just colored boiled rice and meat.

Apparently u get the same effect if u rub a metal spoon with your hands whilst washing. Heard a chef say it on tv, don't know if it works tho.
Yes, I think any stainless steel should work.
