^^ It is sad that SO many women have had such a horrific experience. Reading those comments made me thank my stars that my doc was patient enough to explain the procedure to me before doing the test. She even showed me the speculum and how it works, and let me feel the pap smear brushes (they look like they are bristly and sharp, but they’re actually very soft) so that my mind was at ease.
All I can say is choose your doctor wisely. Look up their reviews before you go for the test, take recommendations from friends. Also educate yourself about what to expect - there are videos on youtube that show the test with all the details.
Another thing, if you’re scared, tell the doc or nurse that. They will spend an extra 5 mins with you to make you more comfortable.
