The question might sound a bit dumb, but I really want to know.. how do you slice onions thinly?
i normally cut the onion in half and since I always use a chopping board, I start slicing it, but the slices dont come out as thin as some recipes would ask for .. in which case i just chop the thick pieces
any experts here? any other way to neatly slicing onions thinly?
erm, the long way , Sara .. like keeping the onion with its head on top and then cutting it in half so that i get long slices
Lusi, I do use a sharp knife .. but yes I havnt used a wooden chopping block , does it really make a difference? i did get a wooden block once but found it really heavy to wash and handle so returned it
*sharp knife
*a wooden/plastic cutting board.Anything on which the onion does not slip.
*Fresher onions.I dont know if it is actually the case with others too,but I feel that onions that have been lying for a while (just old,not gone bad..!),have loose layers and they just keep on slipping and it is hard to slice them thinly.
Wow, thanks so much Khatti, I never tried this technique .. but will do .. I have always put the half cut onion , flat side down and then started slicing it .. now I am going to try out doing it the other way round , like you suggested , putting the round side down ..
Only question, is it easy to control the onion? does it not slip?
I simply use my tefal electric machine or a manual slice cutter for this purpose. Even good food processors do have such slicing blades, it’s most easiest way why don’t you try that. No tension of onion slipping etc
