For as long as I can remember, I have been told (by my family, extended fam, and other random family friends) that I can’t sleep with my feet facing a certain way. I’ve had to constantly re-arrange my bedroom furniture because I couldn’t let my feet in the same direction I face while praying…
The reason I bring this up is because when you’re standing to pray, your niyyah/ intention is that you’re facing the Kaaba… In the same sense, I’m sure no one purposely makes niyyah to go to bed with their feet facing towards the Kaabah/ any other disrespect.
So the question… Is this a made up rule? Or is this written some where? (I mean no disrespect. Genuine question.)
**Book ‘Virtues of the Prayer Hall (Sutra of the Musalla)’ of Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 492. **
Narrated 'Aisha: the wife of the Prophet , “I used to sleep in front of Allah’s Apostle with my legs opposite his Qibla (facing him); and whenever he prostrated, he pushed my feet and I withdrew them and whenever he stood, I stretched them." 'Aisha added, "In those days there were no lamps in the houses.”
I came across four hadith narrated all by Hazrat Aisha but in one hadith, She narrates that her legs was actually facing the Ka’aba when Prophet pinched her, she stretched.
Secondly in Pakistan and GCC countries, toilet are made in opposite direction of Ka’aba for example: If Ka’aba is on East then the toilet are designed to face South & North. Don’t know about other countries how they were designed.
There are lot of things if you want you can do and don’t. Like in rental apartment you can change the bed direction but can’t change the toilet direction so it all depends.
Better to change the direction if one’s legs facing Ka’aba.
In GCC the Ka’bah is always in the West! Could be NW or SW - but never East.
Yes the toilets are always aligned normal to the Qiblah … Normal = 90 degrees so the body is side on to the Qiblah, neither the back nor the front is facing the Qiblah.
That hadith above 492 has a dubious English translation. The way Sayyidah Aisha (RA) used to sleep was that her legs would be in the place where RasoolAllah (SAW) would do sajud. That puts her body either to the front-left or the front-right, while her legs would be infront. It means her feet would always be facing normal to the qiblah - 90 degrees not towards it or totally opposite to it - 180 degrees. The prophet Muhammad (SAW) used to sleep on his right hand side face facing the Qiblah and this is the same way we should expect Sayyidah Aisha (RA) to be sleeping as she would be seeking to conform to the Sunnah.
Also this hadith should be viewed in context to the limited space in the household of RasoolAllah (SAW) and should not be used as evidence to purposely obstruct the path of the person who is praying.
No need to apologize Your post (way of explaining) is always better then mine. I read my comments and yours, but yours comments make more sense and clear the point.
May Almighty Allah rewards your for your efforts. Ameen.
