It's happened to me a couple of times. Fortunately, I didn't suffer from any hallucinations.
It's best to sleep on the side. I've heard it's sunnah to sleep on your right side. Also, according to science, sleeping on the side decreases the chance of sleep paralysis occurring than sleeping on your back.
