One of my university projects was centred around sleep disorders and I was pretty surprised at how common they actually are. Also, add in the fact that most sleep disorders go undiagnosed because people don’t even know they’re suffering from one.
Some disorders can be pretty mild like sleep talking while others are much more serious and can affect the sufferer on a large scale. The example that comes to mind is narcolepsy, this is where the sufferer can fall asleep spontaneously anytime, anyplace. This effects the sufferer so much that they find it incredibly difficult to perform simple day-to-day taks. I remember watching a documentary on narcolepsy and it really is a harrowing disorder
Wiki provides a comprehensive list of some of the more common sleep disorders
So…does anyone here suffer from any sleep disorders or know anyone who suffers from any? If so how does it effect you/them and how do you/they deal with it?
I noticed my sleeping patterns were HIGHLY irregular when I was unemployed. I was awake at all odd hours of the night and jus didnt have the need to implement a schedule. Once work started, my sleeping woes were gone!
Niksik, It’s the same with me. I never used to be this lazy I swear but ever since Ramzaan my sleeping pattern has gone all over the place. I’m not sleeping early enough and then I’m waking up around noon
Reha, I agree…I’m just waiting for Uni to start and hopefully that’ll sort out my sleeping routine.
I think I temporarily suffered from sleep disorder when my daughter was born and it went on till my maternity leave was completed.
my parents were really worried when I was in hospital bcuz I used to be awake for an hour then sleep for an hour and I was able fall asleep with in seconds anywhere. After coming home too I had strange sleeping pattern but thankfully when I joined back my work I came back on schedule.
Jokes aside, night terrors and sleep paralysis ESPECIALLY sleep paralysis are horrible. Unfortunately our akalmand people think that these are related to jinns
I don’t like being lazy
Yeah…I’ve suffered from sleep paralysis before and although it’s a bit of a scary experience it’s not exactly some strange, paranormal phenomena. The amount of times I’ve heard people say that it’s related to Jinns is ridiculous.
I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and was put on CPAP. As per doctor if I lose 30 pounds of weight I will not have to use it. I am working on that .
No I am not obese but a little over weight as per my BMI.
Mirch, if you don’t me asking… which type of sleep apnea were you diagnosed with? I know that my cousin suffers from obstructive sleep apnea and he was told to lose weight as well even though he’s only slightly overweight. But the doctor said it’ll help improve muscle tone in the airways. Glad to see you’re working on the weight loss :k: I hope you can stop using the CPAP soon.
Shak, my khala sleep walks…the furthest she got was to her front door, she opened the door, stepped out and then woke up. I don’t know what it is but the idea of sleep walking freaks me out a lil…thankfully no one in my house does it.
I was a sleepwalker in my misspent youth. Would wake up in odd places; under the ironing board, in the bath tub, curled up in the door frame. Must have been dreaming of earthquakes.
Yes, I've heard about it. It's a genetic disease...sounds terrible :(
I guess we take being able to sleep for granted...
I agree! I think for these types of disorders it will be YEARS till any cures come, as the amount of people who have these is low.
Though doesn't a part of a brain control the sleep thing? I was surprised they couldn't use just drugs etc to 'switch' that part on and off. Though not as simple though obviously lol
