I will wait to comment on this futuristic news item , till it is possible to produce slaughter free meat out of laboratory and it has all the characteristics of real meat. Which seems to be decades away , at least it is my impression after reading the news article.
As far as the commercial production of this slaughter free meat is concerned. It is an interesting read and for now it seems to be a wishful thinking

Wouldn't see a harm in it if it meets the quality level, including all the biological shennanigan levels. I'd say this would be a great way to do things.
Good points:
Vegans and people against slaughtering wouldn't have too much of an argument then maybe. :P
Mullah's power all over the non muslim world would weaken considerably, in the matters of haram halal.
Might prevent us from diseases that can be found in cows.
Will help the environment through substantially reduced energy, land and water use.

I read about it in Scientific America. Laboratory production is a year away, and mass production is just a decade away. Real problem is regulatory approval and long term health effects on eaters.
For Muslims as usual the problem will be, can we eat it.. .no we can't .. .well that mullah said this.. .i don't believe with that.. lets look at haadith.. and Quran... .. repeat all the steps forever.

I go with the fatwas issued by Mullas influenced by Western system of education and there are plenty of those. They can relate to ground realities , a mullah from a pind of Pakistan or even from urban area of Pakistan is cut off from realities of life. So I am good to go.
Another thing, a Mulla influenced with Western system of education will not have a vested interest so if he made a mistake in fatwa he is safe and if I am following his fatwa I am safe too.

As long as you do not have any kind of prejudice , any kind of bias, any kind of hidden agenda and you know what you are talking about then your opinion on any matter is as good as mine.

Of course, but the one thing that really turned me against Mullahs is their stance on women rights. No one says EXPLICITLY: "Your daughters are AS GOOD as your sons, they are COMPLETELY, TOTALLY, ABSOLUTELY equal and a MAN IS NOT FAVORED. They are TOTALLY EQUAL"
Many, come close, mind you, but they always stop just short. And also, Mullahs keep reinforcing the stereotypes of women as home-makers (not going out to work). However, credit must be given where its due and I think that Sheikh Hamza has a little more sense than the others.
