Atapattu Ton Puts Windies On Back Foot](http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/030620/203/e2wmz.html)
Marvan Atapattu cracked a wonderful century to give Sri Lanka a slight advantage after a rain-interrupted first day of the first Test against West Indies in St Lucia.
Atapattu was unbeaten on 108 as Sri Lanka reached 250 for four before heavy rain brought play to a premature close with a little under three scheduled overs still to be bowled.
The Sinhalese Sports Club opener was the tourists’ key man but Kumar Sangakkara (56) and Mahela Jayawardene (45) also chipped in with key contributions.
PA International The day started well for the hosts as they snared former skipper Sanath Jayasuriya in the 10th over with the score on 19.
Jayasuriya, who made eight, cut hard at a delivery from paceman Corey Collymore and Omari Banks took a sharp catch in the gully.
But the Windies failed to build on their breakthrough as Sri Lanka formed a strong second-wicket partnership with Atapattu and Sangakkara dominating a bowling attack which included Jamaican Jerome Taylor, who became only the 10th teenager to play Test cricket for the West Indies and the youngest since 18-year-old batsman Alfie Roberts played against New Zealand in Auckland in 1956.
The pair put on 108 before Sangakkara misjudged a delivery from part-time off-spinner Chris Gayle, opting not to play a shot and being given out leg before wicket.
The dismissal did have an air of controversy about it, however, as Sangakkara had, shortly before, been involved in a heated debate with Windies captain Brian Lara.
Lara claimed Sangakkara had been deliberately running on the wicket, roughing up the line just outside off stump with a view to maximising the conditions for Sri Lanka’s ace-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan later in the match.
The argument continued as Sangakkara trudged off with Lara offering him some strong words to take back to the pavilion.
Atapattu appeared totally unflustered, though, and continued to impress in tandem with Jayawardene.
They added 68 for the third wicket as the match threatened to drift away from a West Indies side desperate to make up for defeat in the one-day series which preceded the Tests.
The hosts needed a wicket and got it as Lara dived away to his right to take a terrific catch off the bowling of Banks to claim the scalp of Jayawardene.
Captain Hashan Tillakaratne made just 13 before being bowled by Collymore and Atapattu was accompanied to the close by Thilan Samaraweera (7 not out).
