I am hoping that someone here will be able to answer my question. I am thinking of buying one of those Skype handsets, where you can use Skype to make phone calls. You can get dual phones that apparently dont require a PC to to use Skype and make Skype calls. I am thinking of buying two phones so me and my husband who is in Pakistan can talk with each other for free, using Skype to Skype. Is this do-able? Do you need internet access to use this? I have internet access, but he doesnt.

Another question - is there wireless internet in Rawalpindi/Islamabad? I have a mobile USB modem connected to my laptop computer. Will this work in Pakistan?
Wateenprovides WiFi in Pakistan I am sure ISB is covered. As far as Skype phone is concerned it works over WiFi. So yes apparently you both need to be on Internet to make Skype to Skype calls. For further info you can check Skype-WiFi.
You can get Wimax from www.wateen.com or your husband can get broadband internet from PTCL or LinkDotNet. i guess, you don’t need to buy skype phones, since skype application is free and PC to PC calls are free. if you are in Pakistan for limited time, you can get Warid’s GPRS for 600 Rupees a month and its unlimited. www.waridtel.com .
I bought SMC WSKP100 Skype phone, WSKP100 - Google Search it a little gadget with 16Meg mem and runs on linux.. In a nut shell its a piece of garbage… It keeps locking up.. Don’t buy a dedicated Skype phone get Windows Mobile 5 or 6 and down load the software from skype.
I am using Skype for incoming and out going calls for last 5 years, given the cost savings I cannot complain, the sound quality is pretty good. My friends and family have skype in Pak and that is what I use, depending on the quality of connection in Pak I lose connectivity once or twice within 60 minute call but the sound quality is good.
bumping this thread as i need some advice which skype phone and base to purchase for use in pakistan. i need the one that the base unit plugs into the wi-fi router, and then the skype phone is cordless. the one which you dont need a PC or laptop at all, just a wi-fi router.
they are selling on ebay for £65, im wondering if anyone has any experiance using such phones for skype calls.
i bought $10 on powervoip.com cost me $12.50 with VAT and admin charges, but i can now sms text any PK mobile for $0.04c and calls to PK mobiles are $0.04 per minute.
call quality is not 100%, i can hear voice clearly but other side complained my voice was low volume. And we exprianced a few drop outs of 1/2 seconds during a 15 minute call.
will try again with a usb voip phone i ordered from ebay £3. when end user in PK gets their phone connect to internet router the calls will be free so im hoping the call quality is not allways like this.

As far as I know, its ridiculously cheap to call the UK from Pakistan, way cheaper than the other way. I suggest you let the side in Pakistan call you. You can always reimburse them with the amount you would spend yourself.

yes indeed its cheap about 1/2 rupeya a minute. i can call from uk to pk mobile for around 0.05c a minute (via viop). or 5.5 pence per minute via BT internet call, or 4p a minute via a calling card.
its cheap but 2rp x60 minutes x7days x52weeks = 43680rp so.... its over £300 of my hard earned money.
i decided the skype/voip physical phone is not worth it. All new mobile phone have symbian or Android which run skype or Voip App and connect to internet directly via WLAN.
i am researching ways of calling a PK Samsung CorbyW via voip or Yahoo Messanger from my PC in uk.
small problem the Corby does not have symbian or android or direct wlan connection, while it does have Java and can connect to internet for instant messanger chat (via numbuzz app) (its great for messages and photo exchange, voice message exchange but has no voice chat)
Will get them to use to try "Nefanasa Yahoo" its java based IM client with voice chat for mobile phones. any 2 mobile phones using voip/messenger can make free calls. So im trying for that wish me luck.
Why isn't Skype worth it? I would have thought that'd be the perfect solution.
i ment the skype handset that connects directly to your broadband router (no pc) - cost around £125/£150 plus mean an extra phone, alonside your house phone and your mobile phone(s) means there will be at least 3 phones with 3 seperate lines. "not worth it" i ment like practically too many phones!

That's why I said Skype would be the best option (On a smartphone).
