SKINCARE - Is it totally necessary?

There are so many skin products on the market: cleansers, toners, moisturisers, exfoliators, skin peels…etc, etc. The list is endless, but is all of this really that necessary?

None of this was prevalent in my mother’s day; just a dollop of Nivea cream and she was good to go- in fact, my grandmother didn’t even go to this extent- and both have beautiful skin. So my question is, are we actually doing more harm than good?

Please discuss.

That generation had a better diet than we did and weren't exposed to as much pollution/technology
/etc as we are today

Re: SKINCARE - Is it totally necessary?

That's actually a very good question!

& This is the right answer :D

Re: SKINCARE - Is it totally necessary?

I would like to add that yes, i think some people over expose their skin to all these things and at the wrong age which can do them more harm than any good. So yah, for everything there is a right time (age) to use it and how to use it. Plus the creams and lotions alone can’t do you all the good, your diet has to be balanced and healthy in order to make sure that you keep glowing  :k:

Re: SKINCARE - Is it totally necessary?

^ Agreed. In addition to the change in lifestyle/enviornment....these days we're also exposed to more sun. I know I definately dress differently than my nani or dadi did back then, and I'm also out of the house more often.

And we also put a lot of make-up on our skin on a regular basis that wasn't used by previous generations......I'm positive that my nani/dadi didn't use foundation/powder/blush/highlighter/bronzer etc. etc. etc. on regular basis (if ever!).

Re: SKINCARE - Is it totally necessary?

This is true (to a certain extent). Maybe I should’ve added in my original post, that I know many people of our generation who also opt for the less-is-more approach. :hmmm:

Re: SKINCARE - Is it totally necessary?

well my mum never had teenage acne and hardly every pimples/spots. therefore, she never really needed much in the way of makeup and yes, a simpler look was more normal.

so yeh, food and environment.

my mum is late fifties and although she has good skin in regards to texture (never dry, never oily and velvety) and not too many wrinkles, looks good for her age. however, she has a lot of freckles and age-spots all caused by sun damage as she never wore sun protection her life. and she wasn't outside any more than we are. so that is something i'm really concious of.
