Size & Darzi

Hey girls!

I’ve a sort of problem. I have sent some clothes to pak to a darzi, but I’m having a lil problem writting up my size. For instance I dont know what “hips” are called in urdu? and I dont know wht above chest is called in urdu or whether it has a specific names?

My mum has no clue either, she cant think of the “real” name of hips either. And she says one can just meassure the “ghair” of the kameez and tell the darzi that “gher is so and so inches” .. can one do that? ..

Help plz

Btw I have meassured shoulder, above chest, chest, waist, hips, lenght of leg, lenght of kameez and arm .. have I forgotten something? Uff .. next time I will just send a suit!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Size & Darzi

i think its just called called hip and chest

Re: Size & Darzi

There is no urdu name? There must be an urdu name .. hmm or are u being funny now hmmm ..

btw are u in dk? .. assuming from ur name?

Re: Size & Darzi

^erm .. sure rolleyes

Re: Size & Darzi

yup.. we always just say hips and chest.

and yes, you can take the width of the bottom of the kameez. how the fitting comes out really depends on how the tailor interprets your body measurements. so if you have a kameez with a daamun width that you like, you would put down your hip measurement and also say 'after stitching daamun should be x inches'. i actually do that for all my measurements now, so they know what sizing i prefer after stitching. otherwise sometimes clothes end up being too fitted or too roomy, depending on how much they have decided to add.
also, if the darzi is good, they will also take the chest point and waist point to make sure the chest and waist sit at the right place for your torso.
then you need neck circumference for any high necks you might be making, and neck width and depth for everything else.

Re: Size & Darzi

sweetmoi, the best thing is to usually measure an outfit that fits you perfectly, thats usually easier than a body measurement

Re: Size & Darzi

i dont think they measure that for kameez

u need to measure chest and its the same in urdu, shoulders (kandah), waist (kamar), Gehra and you can also tell them how long chaak should be..... those darzi r really smart....rest they calculate it 'em self

hope that helps....

thank you gals! :D

Re: Size & Darzi

I had a really hard time understanding why u were supposed to give them half of your hip, waist and chest but not for your shoulders... LOL!

Let me add a reply too...

Tailors usually call "teera" what we call kandhey/shoulders...so this is the word used by them for shoulders, then chest, waist, hips, ghaira, size of chalk, length of sleeves, width of sleeves, and for shalwar, length, paaincha, aasan and thighs. Thats it! :)

Re: Size & Darzi

or u can make a call to your darzi and let HIM ask for the sizes he need?...

they understand chest and hips there.

Re: Size & Darzi

You need to send following measurements.

chest, waist, hips, sleeve length, shirt length, ghair of shirt, shalwar length, paincha width etc

If you are being picky then chaak length as well otherwise tailors can calculate it themselves.

Also you wanna let them know how wide you'd like the sleeves. For instance if sleeves are short then they should be around 5.5" -6" wide assuming they are around 5"- 6" in length.

the urdu for chest would be seena. but like i said, they usually use chest. you need to provide measurements for shoulders (kandhay), chest, waist (kamar), hips, shirt bottom (daman or ghair). don't forget the side slits or chaak of the kameez. also, how low you want your necklines to be. sleeves length, style and sleeves bottom width. for shalwar, belt size, length and paincha width. if your'e getting straight pants made, don't forget the thigh measurement.

Re: Size & Darzi

chest is seena or chati. Hips is kol-hay.

Re: Size & Darzi

I never give chaak lenght as that's dependent on the kameez lenght but measure from armpit to where I would like tha chaak to start

Re: Size & Darzi

chaak start after the hips end, so your hip covered by the kameez. or after 3/4 or the hips covered.

Re: Size & Darzi

^^last time when i was in pak around 1 1/2 yr Chaaks didn't start below the hips part but right from the waste showing salwars belt n some part of ur waiste :)

Re: Size & Darzi

or you could say uper say xx inches kamar say xx inches and hips pay say xx inches hehe man this is funny, but that's how my mom says it she doesnt even say hips, she says neechay say :D
