A “kidnapping” and subsequent love marriage with a girl by a married man has resulted in a Jirga ordering the marriage of his six-month-old daughter to the brother of the “kidnapped” girl.

According to sources, Alamzeb, “abducted” the daughter of his neighbour, Naseer, from the Reri Goth area in Karachi two months ago.

The sources said that Naseer’s daughter had actually eloped with Alamzeb as they loved each other, but the case was taken as a matter of honour by the family members of the eloped girl, who had started pressuring the family of the accused, inlcuding threats.

The sources said that Alamzeb, who has three children, hailed from the Hazara region, while the girl belonged to Charsadda in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The sources said that the wrangle between the two families led to holding of a Jirga comprising elders of the locality.

The Jirga, according to the sources, brokered a compromise between the two families and it was decided that the six-month-old daughter of Alamzeb should be married off to the brother of the girl, Haq Nawaz, 25, on the basis of Swara.

It is worth mentioning here that Swara is a child marriage custom in tribal areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

This custom is tied to blood feuds among different tribes and clans where the young girls are forcibly married to the members of different clans in order to resolve the feuds.

What a compromise... and what decision!!! is it necessary for a Jirga member to be a brainless person?

Re: Six-month-old girl married off in Swara incident

It's common to hear Jirga stories from villages but this is the first time I have heard such thing from Karachi. Really , these people call themselves muslims and they are marring off a 6 months old girl. It's just disgusting plain disgusting. That 6 months old doesn't even have the sense to feed herself and in Islam you can not marry off a girl without her consent (Nikah only can not take place) ............how on the earth they reached to such a decision ?

and what do they think that little girl is some sort of object which can be traded. They are worse than janwars.

Re: Six-month-old girl married off in Swara incident

disgusting... we do need an education reform in northern areas on emergency basis.

Sister, do you think that Allah has made them suffer with DRONES and Mehsoods and Fazlullah for no reason???

i agree with Kakabali for education re-form but who is going to do it, ANP the party in power had one point Agenda, change the name.. they have achieved it and now ( like other govts) they have no idea what to do, at federal level, we have got no policy whatsoever.. yes there are initiatives from the private NGOs but they have their limitations... yet they are doing their level best to educate people in rural areas...

The problem with these people is that they are very RIGID and the only rules and Islam they have is for women. Why didn't they trade any men ? we always hear women killed in the name of honour , women given as a settlement like in the above case ! it's always women who bear the burden of wrong doings of men.

No body can educate them ! really unless and until they have the willingness to change themselves no government and no NGO can but what govt can do is to implement strict laws. But as far as my knowledge goes normal Pakistani laws don't work there all they have is the jirga system. They have been freed from Pakistani Law and they don't accept it ! Govt has to make them accept. But this will require sincere commitment which I doubt any of our leaders or politicians have.

I can't imagine what the mother of that girl must be going through. What will happen to that baby ?

Do you really think education will help? These people care more about their cultural 'rights' than anything else.

Re: Six-month-old girl married off in Swara incident

no offense but most cultures/ethnicities in pakistan have barbaric practices still in use today.. i mean c'mon, why can't u pass a law against such practices or if there's a law, why don't u enforce it?? we r quick in adopting negative western influences so why can't we learn to enforce laws from westerners? why only the bad stuff, why not the gud ones that could actually benefit our ppl?? do majority of pakistanis even have have brains?? or are they sub-humans??

Re: Six-month-old girl married off in Swara incident

^ Yup I agree !

Before India & Pakistan's independence when British were ruling they banned the hindu tradition of SATI in which they used to burn the wife alive with the husband's corpse. They banned it and now it is no longer practised in India.

We not only need law but also it's strict implementation.
