**6,200 schools closed in 31 districts of Punjab, PA told **
** Treasury member claims 248,000 poor students forced to quit education

LAHORE: The Punjab government closed 6,200 operational schools in 31 districts, while an illiterate person had been appointed as adviser to the chief minister, the Punjab Assembly was informed on Monday.

A treasury member, Sheikh Allaudin, while moving an adjournment motion, informed the House that government had closed 6,200 schools in 31 districts in March this year. He said 248,000 students, including girls belonging to poor families, were studying in these schools and by this decision they had been forced to quit education.

The 39th session of the Punjab Assembly, which was called on the requisition of the opposition, started one hour and 48 minutes late than its schedule time under the chairmanship of Speaker Rana Iqbal.

Soon after recitation from the holy Quran and the Naat, the House offered fateha for the victims of Rasool Park and Gujrat terrorist attacks as well as for the late father of Naeem Khan, an MPA from Vehari.

Later, opposition leader in the House Raja Riaz of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), on a point of order, criticised Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for his acts like holding camps and protest rallies against the federal government. He said that the chief minister had given the future of education in the hands of an illiterate man named Khizar Hayat Hiraj who had been appointed as his adviser.

At one point when the opposition leader was criticising the CM, a treasury member, Dr Ghazala Rana, started chanting, and in response Raja Riaz disclosed that she was interested in a job at the Aitchison College. Dr Ghazala protested against the remarks, demanding apology from him but the speaker ignored her and Raja Riaz continued his speech. However, the PML-N’s Rana Arshad on a point of order said that opposition had a “Shahbaz Sharif phobia”.

The Punjab Assembly also adopted an hour-long question hour in which provincial Minister Iqbal Channar replied different questions relating to the Prisons Department but all the members, especially the opposition, remained unsatisfied with his answers. The minister said that around 14 new jails were near completion in different districts of the province.

During the question hour, it was also pointed out that there were more than a dozen prisoners who had completed their sentences or could be released on bail after paying some amount, but they did not have money to secure their release.

An opposition member, Ahsanul Haq Naulatia, informed the House that a prisoner had been in jail for the last 19 months for stealing Rs 1,500.

In the meantime, opposition legislator Sajida Mir pointed out lack of quorum and forced the speaker to adjourn the session until today (Tuesday).

I hate this lunatic. He has tunnel vision.

I Hope we get rid of these brothers in the upcoming elections

Re: Situation of Education in Punjab

Another SHOCKING revelation on M Malick's show today:

Federal government's budget allocation for roads (across Pakistan) is Rs 50 Billion and Punjab government has spent Rs 28 Billion on a 21KM Lahore Mass Transit project and it is expected to soon cross Rs 40 Billion :O:O . I am not saying this project will not benefit people but this shows what government priorities are. Instead of fixing exisiting infrastructure that is in PATHETIC condition, we spend this much on projects which are definitely NOT on our priority list.
It's like someone building a swimming pool in their house to show off when they can't even afford to fix a leakage in their bedroom roof.
Laptop is another example, read a few days ago that laptop award ceremony costed more than the actual laptops that were handed out in Gujranwala. Also primary school budget was diverted to laptops which means that more than 50% schools do not have even safe drinking water, hundreds of schools are being closed due to lack of funds and thousands of teachers haven't been paid for long periods.

Re: Situation of Education in Punjab

People who voted these fools deserve what they get...

Re: Situation of Education in Punjab

situation of primary schools in Punjab is quite alarming, infact funds of primary education funds are being spent somewhere else, like the laptop scheme, they bought laptops to fool people, which were not even given on merit basis, that money was stolen from primary education budget.

he can continue to fool people around, but the reality is very small amount of money is being spent on education, as opposed to what they tell awaam.

Re: Situation of Education in Punjab

These fups by PML(N) will definitely benefit PTI in Punjab which will in turn result in PPP's winning the seats in upcoming elections.

Re: Situation of Education in Punjab

One good thing Imran has done is that PMLN can no longer play Punjab card anymore. People of Punjab have more choices. And in the end it will help people in the province. Because every party would be afraid of losing their voters to another side.
Same thing probably will happen in Sindh this time around. A lot of people in Sindh are for the first time questioning PPP's policy and its lack of interest in improving people's lives. This is why it is now possible for the first time in the history of elections in Sindh that PPP may lose several seats in a free election.

I think in Punjab, PTI is going to upset PMLN. And in Sindh, nationalist parties are going to upset PPP.

Situation of Education in Punjab

Another stupidity by sharif bradiraan:chai:they could hv invested the amount on govt schools wich are already there so the poor kids had the chance of better education..

Re: Situation of Education in Punjab

^ these are all short sighted projects which are good for the electorate, like the failed sasti roti, free laptopns, danish schools and ashiana housing. Although it would have been better if they tried to increase jobs, steps to improve IT research in the country, improvement of the educational system, and betterment of the housing department. The end result is that billions have now been wasted but no tangible result from them.

Re: Situation of Education in Punjab

Reforms of Notanki league are some what like rebuilding of Iraq by Bush. First destroy everything and later showup with half baked plans like Daanish schools, Mass transit, increase in Pay of Punjab police twice with no positive results.

Re: Situation of Education in Punjab

No Problems... schools bund huay hayn na? Hum un students ko laptop de deyn ge. Chinta kyun kerte ho?

Re: Situation of Education in Punjab

I agree with dhoti on this. They should be called Noutanki league. Wasting public money on publicity stunts and bad-mouthing the federal gov't seems to be the norm.

PS: How old is this article? It mentions a terrorist attack in gujrat. What's that about? Sorry haven't been following pakistani news much.

Re: Situation of Education in Punjab

^ two months old, there was an attack on army checkpost in gujrat.
