Actors and actresses have been working so hard on their films and their promotions that it seems to have taken a toll on the health of many of them
Is excessive movie promotion taking a toll on Bollywood stars? It does seem so. Earlier, actors never used to do much promotion for their movies, but now the tough competition and the need to promote films aggressively in order to get a great opening nationwide and internationally have led to actors going out of their way for constant public appearances.

Katrina Kaif has fallen ill and is down with low haemoglobin count after she was down with jaundice earlier. Not necessary that the yellow journalism about her personal life got her to turn yellow, but the fact is that her excessive promotion of films like ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ followed by the one for ‘De Dana Dan’ and her return to her boyfriend Salman Khan and thereafter spending time with him seems to have resulted in her falling unwell.

John Abraham too fell unwell in the recent past after a hectic tour in Thailand where he went about rebuilding houses along with R Madhavan and Jimmy Carter. John’s colleague and actor-turned-producer Ajay Devgn, whose ‘All The Best’ released recently, says, “Promotions do influence our films. Media is growing day by day so we need to find different way of promoting our films and it will further grow in the coming days.” Ajay wants to convey that the mediums of communication are increasing day by day so is the time period of promotions. This was quite evident during his last film when the entire cast and crew was out in the sun promoting ‘All The Best’ left, right and centre.
Earlier Priyanka Chopra was doing excessive promotion for her film ‘Kaminey’ and she also went off for a holiday. But the whole shooting exercise took a severe toll on her health and she fell ill after a huge heat stroke. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was also shooting non-stop for her films this year and was down with flu like symptoms during the shooting of Mani Ratnam’s ‘Raavan’. But Dia Mirza, who was seen in ‘Kurbaan’ a week back, comes to their rescue. “Promotions are important. A lot of films release together. So if we want our film to reach to a larger audience we need to promote the film. There is too much happening in the media and its attention span is also very less… they get diverted very easily. So the load on actors and actresses increases tremendously. Even though the film work gets over, real work starts with the promotions of that film,” says Dia.

If one recalls, similar case had happened with Deepika Padukone who was shooting for her film ‘Love Aaj Kal’ without any breaks. Add to it the excessive promotions of the film which led to her falling severely ill by contracting malaria. A highly overworked Vidya Balan, with films like ‘Paa’ and ‘Ishqiya’, was also unwell for a long time.

Even Saif Ali Khan fell unwell after an excessive round of promotion for his film ‘Kurbaan’. Thankfully he has Kareena Kapoor taking care of him though. Perhaps filmmaker Anurag Basu understands actor-producer Saif’s pains better as to why everyone goes to this extent to shoot and then promote their films. “There are so many other avenues of entertainment today that one really needs to raise his voice to promote his product or market it well. It is very difficult to convince a common man to spend 1000 bucks for his whole family to go and buy tickets. We really have to make them aware of our product and get them out of their homes to draw them to cinema halls… It is very difficult to convince them,” says Basu.

Perhaps a little lesser known cases could be that of Celina Jaitley and Asin Thottumkal. While Celina was diagnosed with a stomach infection and was at home for some time, even Asin had a problem with her nose and went to the Lilavati Hospital where she was told that she had a nasal problem.
One wonders whether all this overwork and over promotion for their films is really taking a toll on their health. Better take care, guys.
