Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
Sinus allergy occurs due to several airborne substances that we inhale trough our mouth and nose. However, sinus allergy relief can be accomplished through conventional, natural medicines or homemade remedies. Inhalation of different airborne substance like pollen grains, dust, pollution, animal hair, food particles cloth fibers, ragweed, etc., can lead to sinus allergies in many people. Most of the sinus allergies occur during the spring, late summer and early fall seasons, when the air is dry and moisture free, hence, the most appropriate time for air borne particles or allergens to flow in the air.
But there are lots of treatments or remedies we could use in sinus allergy relief.
Using nasal irrigation with plain or saline water to gently wash away the allergens adhering to the walls of the sinuses is the best natural sinus allergy relief. Drinking ginger or eucalyptus tea and inhaling its steam are also beneficial in clearing the nasal passage and providing instant sinus allergy relief. Since you lose of fluids from the runny nose and watery eyes, drinking lots of fluids will help to replenish the lost fluids in the body. Therefore, when you have an allergy attack, drink lots of water to help flush the allergens from the body and provide sinus allergy relief.
Conventional treatment preliminary includes several types of medications for sinus relief. Over-the-counter expectorants like Robitussin and Mucinex can be used to break down mucus and promote drainage. Antihistamines or anti-inflammatory drugs, and allergy shots - support the immune response.
Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
I get sinusitis a couple of times every year, I hate it. I'm also quite prone to allergies, hayfever etc. I don't think there's any cure for an overactive immune system, just have to deal with the symptoms every time it happens with antihistamines.
Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
my brother uses it and swears by the netti pot. me on the other hand that thing just freaks me out so i don't bother.
Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
my yoga instructor recommended this...i heard it is painful!!! share you experiences after you try is Ask99....
Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
I was sick FOREVER last year and then found out in December that I have allergies :)...yay!
Anyway, one of the members here...Mamaof3 recommended the netipot to me when I had a sinus infection that would NOT go away...I had sinusitis and bronchitis at the same time. This worked.
It does not hurt...its actually just weird to have water going through your nose...but there is absolutely not pain. It helps you breathe through your nose instead of only through your mouth and gets rid of the pressure you feel around your sinus area.
When I have a mild allergy, claritin helps. When its allergy season though...this along with Clarinex will do the trick.
Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
I might have to try this, but it looks very uncomfortable and kind of scary.

It is kind of uncomfortable...its a little plastic pot that you fill with warm water and saline. You put the spout of the pot to one nostril and let the water flow through your nose and out the other nostril.
Very unconventional. But its not really all that different from how we inhale water into our nose during wudu.
Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
you could also try hydrasense. they are little pre-filled tubes that shoot some kind of solution through your nose. i have it in my cupboard and will try it as soon as i get the courage. otherwise, my sinuses are blocked 365 of the year and people have really started commenting all year round, saying "oh you have a cold?" and i have to say 'no that's just how i sound'.
Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
There is also a bottle type thingy by the same brand and I think its a bit easier than the neti pot
Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
I used that netipot bottle thingy , it works only for a couple of hours. During the daytime and if you are at home you can use it every couple of hours , it is better than using any medication. But if you go to work and for those who suffer from clogged nose in the night like me it is not an effective solution for the problem.
My doctor prescribed Nasonex for overnight use which works fine for now.
Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
I doubt these would be available here in Pakistan? I'll check it out though.

Nasonex? Now that scares me a little bit. Something shooting into your nose at the press of a button...shudder I have it but havent even opened it yet.
Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
I use Nasonex but I have something called allergic rhinitis which causes nasal dripping and often infects my throat, Nasonex is the only thing that has helped, regular antihistamines have never worked. However, Nasonex is a steroid so I wouldn't recommend it unless you absolutely need it and even then use it sparingly. It still works for me but I have heard from others that if you use it too much it stops working for some people. Its also important that when you start using it you use it for 2 weeks regularly to make sure you've cleared up all the inflammation. The doctor specifically warned me against just using it until I feel better and then stopping because that doesn't fully clear the inflammation and can cause it to come back with a vengeance.

This is what the doc told me too....that its a steroid...which is another reason Im not too keen on it.
When you go to an allergy specialist, why is it they give you a million things and confuse the hell out of you?
When I walked out of my doc's office...I felt like I didnt believe a word she said for some reason.
She gave me Nasonex, Prednisone, Clarinex and two different types of inhalers.
Is this normal???

That's a whole lot of medication!!!! I'm surprised that she gave you Prednisone......
Were you supposed to take all these together?
Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
Yep, very normal, in the US&A that is. Anywhere else in the world that would be like going hiroshima on a town where there’s three duck thiefs. Prednisone for example is an anti-inflammatory steroid which I use to fight off my MS attacks, not to clear up my nose.
Our bodies produce histamines to fight off microbial attacks. Some trigger happy bodies deploy histamines to fight off poor harmless pollen. The pollen really couldn’t care less but our sinus passages suffer the collateral damage i.e. blocked nose.
Most people can get by with antihistamines. There are tons of naturally occurring antihistamines, ofcourse they aren’t as quick acting as say cetirizine hydrochloride aka Reactine (which i use in dire cases).
What also helps is praying five times a day which in turn encourages you to water down your nose five times a day keeping it all shiny and new from inside.
My own netipot alternative is that i place some water, say about two tablespoons, in the palm of my hand. I then bring it close to my nose and then with my hand attached to my nose i look up at the ceiling. The water enters the nose and trickles down through the nose into my throat at which point i spit it out. I repeat 4-5 times in one sitting and a minute later everything in the nose loosens up which can then be spit out.

Kinda like this. Don’t breathe for the 10 seconds the water is trickling down. Don’t blow your nose immediately after (wait 2-4 minutes before you blow it) otherwise the water will go in your head and give you the drowning-in-swimming-pool sensation which is just too painful.
Re: Sinus /Allergies sufferers
i've been told by my doctor to use it...but, i don't because about a year ago there were two cases where the Neti-pot users died. the reason being the water. somehow, if you do NOT use the distilled water and or if you dry your pot properly then it can cause infections which can be fatal. so, one has to be extremely cautious while using this device.
