I had a colleague, now in her 50s, her parents died early, siblings lived in different places, she was very career oriented, polished, good looking, spent lot of time in her work and thought it will happen, just could not find any suitors till it was too late.

Yes, one of my hubby's relatives. She's in her mid 40s and never married because career was very important for her and the rishta's she got when she was in her 20s were not to her liking. She kept passing them up because she was looking for something that just never came along. After the years passed and the rishta's stopped coming she accepted it and she is living life to the fullest. She has a wonderful career in, lives with her widowed mother and sees her 5 nieces and nephews on a weekly basis. She is their aunt but in reality she is like a second mother to them.
I always wondered why she never got married. She is so smart, confidant, pretty, has a great career and such a wonderful personality. She is also an amazing cook. There is nothing this woman can't do. But a spouse just wasn't in her cards. From what I can tell, she seems to be very happy and fulfilled.
Some people really ARE happy living this way.
