A new duet “We Want Peace” has been released over the Internet for Iraqi singer Kathem El Saher and African American singer Lenny Kravitz, adding to the large collection of new singles sung by singers worldwide calling for world peace and security. Kravitz launched the song, which was recorded in Maiami Florida, during Kathem’s tour of the United States, on the American national association website “Rock the Foot” that encourages involvement of the young generation in politics.

According to the London base daily, Al Sharq Al Awsat, Kravitz, who organized a group performance of a number of singers and sang John Lenins song “Give Peace a Chance” in 1991, revealed that he chose the site Rock the Foot because of his faith in the young generation and freedom of expression.

It was added that a number of US local radio stations have been avoiding airing anti-war songs due to those who support and are for war against Iraq. Earlier this month, music radio stations cut the airing of songs by the group Dixy Chics by thirty percent for openly criticizing President George Bush’s attack on Iraq.

Saher, who is currently on a tour around the US, has used a Canadian passport to enter the US in the fear of facing racial hostility and criticism at the John F. Kennedy airport. Kathem had received his visa to enter the US from the American embassy in Morocco and had decided to use his Canadian passport to move more freely around the US.

Kathem had feared to reveal his Arab identity by using his Iraqi passport at a time when the US is heading for war against Iraq. He was sure he would face many problems and possibly attacked by those who hold prejudice against all Arabs and especially Iraqis. Sources close to Kathem revealed that if it weren’t for the Canadian passport, the singer would have never been able to land on American soil. While in the US, Kathem was able to meet UN General Secretary Kofi Anan and had personally requested that the UN take into consideration the suffering of the Iraqi children if war breaks out.

El Saher was attacked with negative criticism from fans and colleagues in the Arab world and the music industry for going on a tour to the US. The criticism came due to the fact that the singer should not have traveled to sing in the country that is gearing for a war against his country and people, especially after neglecting to hold any performances in Iraq in such a long time.

The singer will remain in the US to complete his tour despite all the criticism he is receiving. It was revealed that a number of close contacts to Kathem had tried endlessly to convince him not to go on the US tour saying it will be rise to a number of controversial issues among people, but the singer refused to go back on his decision. A number of other singers and composers expressed their anger and disappointment towards the singer saying that any singer who sets foot in the US is considered a traitor to the Arab world and is not worthy of being part of it. –Albawaba.com

That is so weird - i was listening to this song when i clicked on your thread.

They have posted their song on this website, free for anyone to hear: http://www.rockthevote.org On the left-hand side, you will have to give an e-mail address in order to download the song.

Speaking of peace songs, REM also released their song “Final Straw” - as a voice of protest against the war. You can listen it to on this webpage: http://www.remhq.com/finalStraw/finalstraw.html (Either Windows Media Player or Quick Time needed).

Beastie Boys released “In a world gone mad” - another anti-war song. (i don’t like it that much though but everyone has their own taste !). Download here: http://nme.co.uk/features/104445.htm

A song i really like is “In a world called catastrophe” by Canada’s Matthew Good band - not certain if it was written for Iraq, but the video and lyrics have rather distinct anti-war messages. Scroll to the bottom of this webpage; the links are towards the left.
