****KARACHI: The Sindh government and Daewoo Pakistan Express Bus Service Ltd formally launched the first phase of ‘Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Intercity Bus Service Project’ during a ceremony held at CM House on Tuesday.
In the first phase of the bus service, 100 new Daewoo buses will ply on the routes connecting Karachi with Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, Benazirabad and Larkana under public-private partnership. Initially, 50 buses are being brought on the roads while as many will be inducted in the fleet later on. Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah said that his government has fulfilled “yet another commitment with the people of Sindh for providing them qualitative, comfortable and affordable transport facilities in accordance with the vision of Benazir Bhutto”. He said that this first phase of the project has been launched with a joint investment of Rs2 billion from the Sindh government and the Daewoo bus service.
He said that the Sindh government will partner with the Daewoo bus service and help initiate the project for Karachi as soon as possible. “We are also working on the BRT [bus rapid transit] project in Karachi and will soon enter into other agreements to execute the projects,” he said, adding that once the BRT projects are complete, most transport problems of Karachi will be solved by the end of 2017.
Daewoo president Chang In Park said that after a transparent bidding process, Daewoo was chosen to be the developer and operator for this project. This is a symbolic project launched as a gesture of goodwill. He said that the new buses will be imported for this project. “Daewoo Express Pakistan is the only international bus service in Pakistan operating in Sindh, Punjab and K-P from 52 cities, catering to the travelling needs of over 500,000 passengers every month.”
Transport secretary Taha Farooqui was of the view that the project was designed to establish a transport network between Karachi and all the divisional headquarters of Sindh and to extend these facilities to each district headquarter of the province in different phases.

Re: Sindh Govt’s intercity bus project launched

PPP need new Shaheed. Too much of BB shaheed labeling. If PPP govt stays in power for net 5 years, directions will sound like this

Take Shaheed BB Bus service to intersection of Shaheed BB highway and Shaheed BB Street. From there get on Shaheed BB train to Shaheed BB goath. Once you get off shaheed BB Goath, walk to Shahaeed BB memorial hall. Registration desk for Shaheed BB seminar is located at Shaheed BB gate of the memorial hall. Dont forget to being your Shaheed BB ID card and Shaheed BB fund document.

Re: Sindh Govt’s intercity bus project launched

You guys such insensitive, these buses could be secretly used for transporting the starving people of Thar, no?

Re: Sindh Govt’s intercity bus project launched

I think its a good initiative. I’m saying this being a future beneficiary of this service. I don’t know the details, but there was definitely a need such service. The private transporters were not following any regulations of safety and charging extra fare even after the reduction in fuel prices. Hopefully, this will be profitable and economically viable option.

PS: We all need to give credit where it is due. If they have given BB’s name to this project and it creates some facility, then its a win-win situation.

Re: Sindh Govt’s intercity bus project launched

When has been a govt run transportation venture “profitable”?

Re: Sindh Govt’s intercity bus project launched

Re: Sindh Govt’s intercity bus project launched

Daewoo are one of the most expensive transportation service in pakistan. How poor will benefit from it? is sindh govt going to subsidize it?
PMLn ne ye kam kia hota to fazool hota. People now appreciate the talk of BRT in karachi was condemning sharif for talking same. rangbazi?

p.s. not a PMLn supporter

Re: Sindh Govt’s intercity bus project launched

I think Daewoo got permissions to build stations/infrastructure etc on the condition that they name their service after Shaheed BB and ‘pay their dues’.

Re: Sindh Govt’s intercity bus project launched

People are either so stupid or just hypocrites.

To this date, there has been no proper audit in disgustingly expensive project that’s called Metro bus (whatever records were available at mysteriously burnt).

Yes, it is not rocket science that Pakistan needs an improved and systematic transport system, but remember you are a poor and highly debt infested country - on what basis can these oligarchs justify giving out such expensive contracts? This is exactly how white collar corruption is done. Unfortunately, in Pakistan you just don’t have such level of awareness in the country. That’s the real tragedy.
