Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

One can easily see the non serious/careless attitude of PPP. They are holding their Sindh Festival on top of Moenjodaro ruins. So much for the pain of Sindh’s culture and history.

Sindh festival at Moen Jo Daro: Civil society starts own

**KARACHI: **Three days before the ‘cultural coup’ in Sindh is scheduled to kick off, civil society members write to Unesco to save the inauguration site – Moen Jo Daro – from further destruction.

The brainchild of Pakistan Peoples Party patron-in-chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sindh Festival, will start from February 1. The historical site of Moen Jo Daro was chosen for the inauguration ceremony and preparations are already under way.

A group of archaeologists, historians, academia, civil society leaders and writers of Sindh have requested Unesco to intervene and save Moen Jo Daro from further destruction.

“The organisers of this event are not aware how this kind of an event can damage our archaeological assets, history, culture and art of the province,” said a letter written to Unesco country representative, Kozue Kay Nagata. “We appreciate the effort to revitalise the long-lost culture but it should not be done at the cost of destroying the ruins and structure of the site.”

Ishtiaq Ansari, Badar Abro, Hakim Ali Shah Bukhari, Khalid Hashmani, Zulfiqar Halepoto, Aziz Narejo, Dr Ali Gul Metlo, Munir Bhurgari, Ali Palh and Shuja Qureshi are among the signatories of the letter. The archaeological ruins of Moen Jo Daro are declared one of the greatest and precious cultural heritage of human civilisation. The site was inspected by a Unesco team in 1980 and was declared as the greatest heritage site to be preserved and protected.

These people shared their grievances soon after the preparations of the inauguration ceremony began. Labourers have been hired to build a massive stage and poles and tents have been erected around the site so that shops can be set up for the festival. “Live musical and dance programmes will be held on this site where thousands of people are expected to attend,” pointed out Halepoto. “This can ruin the site.”

Copies of this letter have also been shared with Bilawal, his father and former president Asif Ali Zardari and other PPP leaders. “This is not a promotion or celebration of culture. This is complete destruction and madness and it must stop without any further delay,” the letter stated, urging Unesco officials to talk to the provincial government and stop the non-technical labour from carrying out further construction.

These archaeologists and writers have also sought Unesco’s support for a more intense conservation plan to save the site and promote it as a wonder of the ancient world that seems to have been forgotten.

The letter also pointed out that nearly $23 million were generated through the ‘Save Moenjodaro’ international campaign, jointly run by the federal government and Unesco, but very little is known about how the money was used.

**In defense
**
Culture secretary Saqib Soomro termed the accusations in the letter as mere speculation. Everything is a ‘makeshift arrangement’ and no one is digging to erect electric poles, he said, adding that only a few people have been invited to the event to raise funds for Moen Jo Daro conservation.

“Every day we hear of blasts and hardly hear any good news,” he said. “This is an excellent opportunity, which is being opposed by some people for their vested interests.”

Archaeology director Qaim Ali Qasim also told The Express Tribune that he has been personally monitoring the event and nothing will happen to the site. “There will only be a laser show along with a display of the statue of dancing girls, a kind priest and other artefacts found from the site,” he explained. Meanwhile, Halepoto felt the entire event was nothing more than an attempt for a “photo session”. “Why don’t they select other nearby place for the event? Why Moen Jo Daro?”

Re: Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

There was a time PPP and its founders were known for bright and educated people. Later its turned into a toilette that has not been flushed for years.
Their representatives that come on daily talk shows are like the worst idiots on this planet. Nobody decent is left in the party.

Re: Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

PPP has turned the entire country into one huge Moenjodaro through their government in just five years. So we don't really need such an ancient piece of history whereas we have a latest piece made available by the Zardari league.

Re: Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

First they redirected flood water thru the city of Moenjodaro now this festival....looks like water fail to destroy the all remains.
ps: SHC stopped them from building the stage.... see guys still whole world is against PPP

Re: Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

I agree. This festival should be far away from the site which is already in dilapidated condition due water logging and salinity. Instead funds should be raised to preserve this one of the oldest civilization on earth.

I have learned that CJ Sindh has stopped this festival on petition filed by people of Sindh.

Re: Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

Bilawal tweets that its all good......all damage is being done under the supervision of an archaeology expert with 30 years of experience.

Re: Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

:k:

If they really wanted to hold it near the ruins, I believe it would have been better to move it a few kms away. This is an important site for us as well as the whole world.

Save Mohenjo-Daro

Petition by Sindh based archaeologists, historians, academia, civil society leaders, writers and intellectuals

You kind office must be knowing the fact that archaeological ruins of Mohenjo-Daro are declared as one of the greatest and precious cultural heritage of human civilization. The site by inspected by UNESCO team in 1980 and later was declared as the greatest heritage site to be preserved and protected.

The discovery of the colonial officials from the Archaeological Survey of India in 1924 when they excavated a hill on the banks of the Indus River is now known as the identity of a highly civilized, integrated, well-planned urban landscape Sindhi society.

The amazing intact large houses on grid-system roads, with their own bathrooms and drainage and sewage systems exposed the modernization of Sindhi society at this time. The recovery of a ceremonial public bath, a civic center, grain stores, a debating hall and artifacts which indicated a system of taxation, weights and measures as well as jewellery, toys and chess-like pieces which highlighted its regard for beauty and recreation further expand the existing of a great urban Sindhi society.

The tragedy is that the governments at national and provincial level have been so insensitive to preserve and respect their glorious past culture, heritage and archaeological sites. Same happened to this greatest site and it has been neglected till now. The site’s clay brick walls, layer of mud, continuous salt crystals from rain and river water and other factors are destroying the bricks.

Couple of days back Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the young Pakistan People’s Party leader, son of Benazir Bhutto, the late Pakistan prime minister, and former president Asif Zardari and Bhutto dynasty scion, has announced to lead an international campaign to save Mohenjo-Daro, the crumbling ruins of the world’s last surviving Bronze Age city.

We appreciate his ray of hope to bring Mohenjo-Daro and Makli back to life through cultural coup and his resolve to fight against terrorism with the peaceful weapon of tourism and culture.

We would like to bring this matter to his kind notice that under the slogan of cultural coup, the organizers of the events are damaging archaeological assets, history, culture and art of Sindh province where his party’s government is ruling for the last seven years. We welcome his speech to protect the secular civilization fabric of Sindhi society but unfortunately the way the show is going to happen, it is going to further destroy the already weaken ruins and structures of the site.

We are of the view that even Mr. Bilawal was not aware of the fact that what is happening to this glorious UNESCO declared, World Heritage Site of Mohenjo-Daro in the name of ‘Sindh Festival’? We want to tell him that this is not promotion or celebration of culture. This is destruction. Madness. It must stop forthwith. So we, the signatories of this letter to UNESCO and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari show our concern on the ongoing engineering work in preparation of cultural show and appeal to your good office to talk to the government of Sindh to stop further digging of the site by non-technical and non-expert labor and staff.

The eye witness account suggests that the site is continuously decaying for the last two decades, raising the questions regarding the use of funds generated to save Mohenjo-Daro. Both the federal government, the previous caretaker of the site and the Sindh government, the current caretaker of the site, have also failed in the promotion of the site as a tourist spot. On the other hand a huge sum of $23 million was generated through “Save Mohenjo-Daro” international campaign jointly run by federal government and Unesco but very little is known about the usage of that money.

We a group of archaeologists, historians, academia, civil society leaders, writers and intellectuals resolved that there is an urgent need of UNESCO intervention to save the site from further destruction and disaster. Your prestigious organization with the support of international experts try to develop an intensive conservation plan to save the site and promote awareness of the amazing wonder of the ancient world that seems to have been forgotten.

We appeal you to use your good office to stop erection of stage for inauguration ceremony and ask the authorities to shift the inauguration site to some nearby ground to protect the sanctity of the site. We also appeal you to save Mohenjo-Daro and refrain from all such activities in future that can harm the precious historic site.

Archaeological Ruins at Moenjodaro - UNESCO World Heritage Centre

The ruins of the huge city of Moenjodaro – built entirely of unbaked brick in the 3rd millennium B.C. – lie in the Indus valley. The acropolis, set on high embankments, the ramparts, and the lower town, which is laid out according to strict rules, provide evidence of an early system of town planning.

The archaeological site is located on the right bank of the Indus River, 400 km from Karachi, in Pakistan’s Sind Province. It flourished for about 800 years during the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC. Centre of the Indus Civilization, one of the largest in the Old World, this 5,000-year-old city is the earliest manifestation of urbanization in South Asia. Its urban planning surpasses that of many other sites of the oriental civilizations that were to follow.

Of massive proportions, Mohenjodaro comprises two sectors: a stupa mound that rises in the western sector and, to the east, the lower city ruins spread out along the banks of the Indus. The acropolis, set on high embankments, the ramparts, and the lower town, which is laid out according to strict rules, provide evidence of an early system of town planning.

The stupa mound, built on a massive platform of mud brick, is composed of the ruins of several major structures - Great Bath, Great Granary, College Square and Pillared Hall - as well as a number of private homes. The extensive lower city is a complex of private and public houses, wells, shops and commercial buildings. These buildings are laid out along streets intersecting each other at right angles, in a highly orderly form of city planning that also incorporated important systems of sanitation and drainage.

Of this vast urban ruin of Moenjodaro, only about one-third has been reveal by excavation since 1922. The foundations of the site are threatened by saline action due to a rise of the water table of the Indus River. This was the subject of a UNESCO international campaign in the 1970s, which partially mitigated the attack on the prehistoric mud-brick buildings.

Re: Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

So did they cause any damage to the site? or it was more of 'Bughz e Mu'awiya' than 'Hubb e Ali' scene?

Re: Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

^ the festival should start today...such events are not allowed in heritage sites of pakistan in any case...even if no harm is caused still its violation of the laws...thats another thing who cares about them.

Re: Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

^^^PPP always attracted a mamoth crowd in political gatherings. Many are unaware of the importance of this site which is not only heritage of Sindh but also heritage of the world. PPP leadership or any other political party should refrain from organizing political gatherings at or near this site. There are plenty of room far away from the site, which can be used to organize such gatherings.

Re: Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

not allowed?

Look at that rampaging mob, trampling all over the World Heritage Site of Petra pic.twitter.com/eceUoYX68W

Concert at El Jem World Heritage Site in Tunisia. Oh look theres a stage!

PPP is claiming otherwise. I think all the concerns will prove right or wrong, ones the festival is over.

Re: Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

it has started now...live on dawn

Re: Sindh Festival in Moenjodaro

Muawiyah is irrelevant in front of Ali. To say 'bughz e Muawiyah' is giving him too much importance.
No matter how high any one think of Muawiyah, he is a tiny figure as compared to the gigantic personality of Ali ibn Abi Talib. So people love Ali for his being Ali. Nobody, NOBODY, loves Ali due to animosity with Muawiyah.

He was just giving reference which is normally used in envy, hatred or jealousy by someone so nothing wrong here. However I have never heard that Hazrat Ali ever used as Ali ibn Abi Talib, as Abu Talib died as unbeliever even so much requests by Mohammad PBUH while his favorite unlce was on death bed.

What is the point of this post Muqawwee? I must say it’s a very very misleading post.

I hope you do know that it’s ultimately the archaeologist who decide these things. One particular set of safety and quality assurance rules cannot be applied to all World Heritage sites. They are all incredibly unique and have different areas of concern. I hope you also know that some of World heritage sites are more sensitive and in fact, sufficiently endangered, while some of them are perfectly able to stand the test of time. Unfortunately, Moenjodaro falls in the former category.

You can appreciate Zardari Kids’ efforts for all you want, but for sake of personal integrity, please do not dismiss the completely legitimate concerns of our very own Pakistani archaeologist (some of them are actually employees of Sindh government) and a High Court decision. I can assure you, these archaeologists know a thing or two more about extremely and high risk delicate condition of ancient City of Moenjodaro than me, you and Bilawal Zardari.
