Why did the alpha particles passing through the thin gold leaf mean they have alpha particles have a postive charge?

Fiber optics - how is the angle of incidence of light controlled to > critical angle for total internal reflection to take place,

the alpha particles question was a bit confusing for me too. I, too, thought the particles deflected thus proving nucleus was positively charged but Rutherford was more interested in the model of the atom rather than its charge.
