Why did the alpha particles passing through the thin gold leaf mean they have alpha particles have a postive charge?

Why did the alpha particles passing through the thin gold leaf mean they have alpha particles have a postive charge?

the alpha particles question was a bit confusing for me too. I, too, thought the particles deflected thus proving nucleus was positively charged but Rutherford was more interested in the model of the atom rather than its charge.
