Is there a way to turn it off? I don’t see it and couldn’t find it in the book…

Press and hold the Play/Pause button for a second or two.

Hmmm... considering this question, it may also be helpful to note that if you press the menu button for a few seconds, the backlight will come on. The backlight goes away after a few seconds automatically, but if you want to manually switch it off, press the Menu button again for a few seconds.
Also, if you put a song on Pause, after a minute or so, the iPod will shut itself off to conserve power.
When you think about it, its all pretty logical.
