SIKKIM is the second smallest state in India with app. 100 kms from north to south and 60 kms from east to west and yet has an elevation ranging from 300m to 8585m above sea level. The most majestic mountain chain in the world that includes the Khangchendzonga, the world’s third highest mountain, dominates its Geography. Until 1975, Sikkim was an independent kingdom, ruled by the King Chogyal.
Surrounded by Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan on three sides and with West Bengal on the fourth, Sikkim is entirely mountainous, with one - third of the land covered with dense forests of sal, sambal and bamboo. Sikkim is watered by the perennial river Teesta, and its tributaries, which are fed by both snow and rain. The grandeur of its mountain peaks, lush valleys, fast flowing rivers, terraced hills and incredible floral wealth, make a visit to Sikkim a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
Gangtok capital city of Sikkim , means, “hill top” and the little capital of Sikkim is on top of 5,500 feet, right on the edge of the valley. From Gangtok, you look over the hillside, down and across to terrace fields, with tall, white Buddhist prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and endless vistas of many shades of green.
