Sikhism

The only sikh here is channji I think. As far as I know

yes you can convert
you shouldn't cut your hair and shave but many do it
nirankaris dont eat meat, otherwise dont have alchohol
homosexuality is not allowed
the gurus were prophets
yup, GGS is recited, dunno about learning it by heart, depends on how devout you are.

:)

As far as I know, Sikhism was founded on the teachings of Guru Nanak. His teachings are a kind of mixture between Hinduism and Islam. He tried to piece together all good aspects of the two religions into one. The concept of the 5 Ks and the hair etc was not in the original teachings.

I think Guru Gobindh was the one who gave the religion a military twist !! At that time the Sikhs were being attacked by Aurangzeb Alamgir's forces. So in order to fight back, all these militant attributes were added in. I've heard that the concept of not cutting the hair is that they will not cut their hair until the land is free from all muslims!! Same with the Karpan.

The religion is not an exclusive one so you should be able to join in if you must. But these days most sikhs believe that their religion is a little out of date. So they shave and cut their hair etc. But the strict Sikhs absolutely hate muslims so you might have a few problems!! The usual taboos on alcohol, sex, homosexuality etc exist in this religion too- infact even smokng is a big NO too.

well sikhism was basically a sufi religion started by guru nanak which showed a way between islam and hindusim its teachings esp the guru nanak part is very good. initially this religion was opposed by the upper caste hindus but latter on as this cult grew into religion and then a movement it was despised by the ruling class of that era which was muslim. and the rulers started persecuting the sikhs.and the peaceful sufi religion was transformed into a military force by its last guru who maybe because to avenge his fathers death at the hands of the muslims decided to make it a martial relgion. and infact the last guru gobindh singh was also killed by a pathan.
i say the sikhs are good folks and i like thier way of life but at the same time some of thier religious ideas are out dated and some of thier interpretations show muslims in bad light and may easily incite sikhs against muslims. thier practise like carrying of arms etc is also out dated and rather dangerous

The historical enmity of the Skihs towards the Muslims stems from the fact that the Mughal empire refused to recognise Sikhism as being a separate religion, and instead classified the Sikhs as being a heretic Sufi order.

The Mughal Empire therefore set about attempting to eliminate what they felt was a regional Muslim heresy.

The Sikhs initially attempted non-violent resistance, but this led to the Mughals becoming crueler and crueler in this punishment. Eventually, the Sikhs were metamorphised into a militant order, persecuted by the Muslim state.

The Kirpans, the daggers that all Sikhs are obligated by their faith to wear, for example, were originally worn, as I understand, as defence against Muslims.

As the Mughal Empire grew weaker and weaker and the Sikhs grew in strength, they eventually seized control of large areas of the Punjab (and later the NWFP) and began taking revenge on Muslim locals for the actions of the Mughal Empire in the past.

Muslim armies proved unable to crush the Sikh state, which eventually ony fell once the British declared war on the Sikhs.

thats true the sikh rule was also a rule of baised mismanagement they made lot of enemies even today the pakistanis use the word " sikka shahi" for mis rule that word is derived from sikh rule. when the british attacked the sikhs the pathans were in the forefront of the anti sikh force which ultimately lead to thier downfall

Mr. Kabir,

You made an historical error in your last post. The pharse 'Sikka Shahi' is not derived from the Sikh rule but rather from the rule of Nizam Sikka. In old days Sikka is a person who used to provide water to the people. He was made a king for a day by Humayun (if I am not mistaken after he saved Humayun from drowning in a river). So the rule of an inept leader is called 'Sikka Shahi'.

Sikhs during their rule of Punjab was very offensive against the Muslims. Adhan was banned and they also use mosques as stable for their horses. Muslims have no religious freedom under their rule. Thats why, Hazrat Syed Ahmad Shaheed raised arms against that oppresive government.

A sikh freind told me that in parts of punjab if a sikh is seen without a turban, or short hair etc, he is executed.

When guru nanak passed away, is it true that the muslims wanted his remains to be buried, and the sikhs wanted to cremate the body, thus increasing the rift between them, and his remains disappered. for wich muslims were blamed. ...is it true?

WELL its true that in rural punjab the sikhs are more orthodox
but this statement is an exageration they may not approve young people without turban but execution is too much to be true
