Significance of rings in Hinduism

It seems almost all my Hindu co-workers wear a ring or two, usually with a stone. Is there any religious significance of wearing such rings or is it something to do with Bollywood?

Re: Significance of rings in Hinduism

That depends on the individual where he is from:
Stones are in favor of planets, Planets in favor of birth stars, Birth stars are in favor of time, Time is in favor of your karma.

Here are some of them,

• Love connection.
• Astrology.(birth stone)
• Inherit ancestor’s lucky stone.

I have also noticed that South Indians wear it more than the north indians. Is it a correct observation? I am not stone expert but if I was, would that mean I can tell what month the person was born by looking at their ring?

Re: Significance of rings in Hinduism

There is an idiotic fad going about in India where men even those in the North, wear feminine banded rings with bezel set stone on all of their fingers. I've seen many a bollywood celeberties as well as average joe schmoo doing this.

All in al the whole concept looks gay with a deshi touch......

Look for Pakis in their relentless effort to emulate Indians to take up this trend....Look out for men sporting feminine rings along with saffron colored dupattas usually during weddings.

lol.....i have no idea about those stone stuff...

Re: Significance of rings in Hinduism

Different ringstones are worn for different planets. Astrology is widely followed in India and it is much more personalized than the sunsigns which is common for 1 in every 12 people on the planet. Generally everyone gets their personal horoscope made. Thus if someone has planet in a weak position in his horoscope and wants to enhance its effect he shall wear a ring in order to increase that planets influence. Every planet has its own effects on humans. Moon effects ones mental thought process, Mercury affects ones speech, Sun affects ones popularity and fame, Jupiter affects ones nobility, Saturn affects ones discipline or lack of it, Mars affects ones strength or softness mentally and so on. So if one has a weak position of Sun in his horoscope, he shall wear a diamond on his right hand third finger (above the mound of the Sun on the palm), or if one has a weak position of moon he shall wear a pearl ring on the small finger of the right hand etc etc.

a-jee, the rings are from all their previous engagements. since hindus are cheapos, they dont return the ring even after they break it off. some of them go thru upto ten engagements before they settle down. especially south indians who are fickle by nature. you wont see guys under 18 wearing rings.

the indian practice of greeting others with folded hands is closely related. when south indians meet north indians - especially gujus, sindhis and marwaris - they hold all their rings as close together as possible for fear of being robbed.

om!

^^
:-) :-)

It isn't a religious thing if you mean "does hinduism require you to wear a ring?". But yes, it is common, particularly for married/ engaged guys. Probably came from the west; could als be that people wanted to show off at least a little bit of the gold that they have secured in the lockers - I can't really show off a thick gold chain around my neck, can I?

These days there is this field of 'gemology' talking about how different jems have different effects on the body. This was soon linked to astrology and people now have started wearing rings with different coloured jems.

But most of the rings continue to remain gold - desis will never loose their love for gold.

Re: Significance of rings in Hinduism

rings are just bollywood fashion with a little bit of astrology sprinkled in.
