*sigh*

So I dropped my Blackberry on the sidewalk and the screen is shattered :teary2: I’m told it’ll cost me upwards of $150 to have the screen replaced - no thank you very much!

Since I refuse to pay that much, just for the screen, I’m considering replacing the phone outright. What are my options? I love the keyboard - it’s a must for me but I’m thinking there’s something to be said for Androids.

Suggestions?

Re: sigh

OMG, we have a chance to convert another person to the ANDROID world. Ok, I shall calm down. So, are touch screen phones not an option then? There are definitely android phones with keyboards but I shall wait for others who have better knowledge to give suggestions. I have always only looked into the touch screen ones.

FYI: I was worried about getting a touch screen but it is so easy to catch on to touch screen. You will get used to it in no time so you should definitely give it a thought.

Re: sigh

You’ll get plenty of recommendations on Androids but may I suggest you download/install Blackberry Desktop Manager and backup your phone.
You can even find third party apps which can open the backup files, and allow you to browse through txt messages, retrieve contacts ,etc…

Re: sigh

but you can type blind on a qwerty. can you do that on your touchy touchy?

Re: sigh

YEP! you totally can...once you get used to swype you literally don't need to look at the screen. I don't text all that much and even I send short texts while driving (don't kill me) without looking. So I'm sure those who use it more often would be able to text without looking at a much faster speed then me. I believe Niksik said she texts without looking.

Re: sigh

That's impressive. I can't force myself to touch screen, always pull my keyboard out.

Re: sigh

There is only one way - get a non keyboard phone so you are forced to use the touch screen. :hehe:

Re: sigh

I know :frowning: Once they stop making keyboard phones, I’ll have to adapt.

Re: sigh

Oh come on, you are in IT...you are suppose to be infront of the pact. disappointed

Re: sigh

By I don't want to use a touchscreen - I want a keyboard :( Don't any of the fancy Androids have keyboards?

Re: sigh

Yes they do but I personally have not looked into them. I am hoping some other members who know more about android phones with keyboard can make some recommendations.

Re: sigh

Yes I can swype without looking, but when driving, if I absolutely have to have to have to text, then I use the voice feature. We need to use all our features now, don't we?

Regarding phones with keyboards, well there's many Android phones with keyboards such as the Samsung SideKick and Captivate Glide, Motorola Droid4 etc etc... and it also depends on what your service provider carries if you're sticking to your plan.

BUT
Why do you want a physical keyboard? I went through the same resistance once but honestly, if you're investing in a smartphone, you want to be able to have all sorts of features, not JUST the keyboard. And so you'll ask me, which is the best Android smartphone and I tell you the Galaxy S3 in my sleep. It's a complete package. The keyboarding experience is amazing once you get a hang of it. Any new system takes a while to learn. But if you are looking to switch, then why not go for the best that's out there given that the top smartphones are pretty much in the same price range.

Re: sigh

come on sehrysh, using a phone with a keyboard is like wearing your pajama bottoms on your head in public. don't do it pal! get something that reflects your personality - something squarish and proper like the iphone. you don't wanna be on macchu picchu and find out that your android solar panel app is just a gimmick - and won't get you thru the trek like you'd planned on the sun god's juice. :\

Re: sigh

Yes, you are right. I shall try not to text while driving.

Agree with the second part. Sehrysh best bet is to go to a store of your service provider and see what your options are. Once you see all the phones in person you will also know which you like. If there are multiple options then you can look into specs and see which is better.

Re: sigh

:ASA: Don't listen to queerio...he doesn't know anything.

Re: sigh

^^ hawww, you called her square :nahi:. And by the way, the iPhone is a rectangle. Get your shapes right Queer :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: sigh

I also wanted a qwerty keyboard, so my first smartphone was a Samsung Captivate Glide. Has a big slide out keyboard that worked just fine, has a really good camera and was just great...of course, until I saw the Galaxy NOTE. I didn't really know if I could give up my physical qwerty, but I really wanted that big screen, and I went several times to the ATT store to play with it to see if I could get used to not having a keyboard. I finally took the plunge when I nabbed a refurb for $50. I did miss the keyboard for a bit, but then I put on Perfect Keyboard which gives me a big onscreen keyboard, simple and clear. I don't do the swype thing.

So my advice is to check out the Samsung Captivate Glide if you really want your qwerty. All the advantages of Android and a bigger screen than your itty bitty BB.

Or take the plunge and go for a Note or an S3.

Re: sigh

haven't used an Anroid with QWERTY keyboard but a couple of colleagues have said good things about the Motorola Droid 4 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro. Not sure if there are newer models of these phones but you can look into it.

That being said, I'd really suggest playing around with a Swype touchscreen keyboard a few times (and I mean a few times, not just once or twice) to see if you can get the hang of it. I personally prefer it over my old BB as well as to thumbing on the iPhone. Swyping is so much faster than typing or thumbing.

Re: sigh

Getting a phone which is half keyboard is such a waste of real estate, you get half the screen and its so shameful. Even the keyboards that slide out, they make the phone so thick. Not sleek at all.

Sehrysh, I can sense the apprehension on moving away from a physical keyboard. Till you try the soft keyboards you'd always have that. Maybe you can borrow someone's Android phone and test out the keyboards. You may notice that I didn't mention iPhone as that keyboard is unchangeable and its a pretty cumbersome. On an Android you can change the style that you want (diff keyboard vendors).

Besides keyboards there are tons of other features like navigation, the breadth of functionality and community support that you've never experienced with a BB before. You'd be amazed by the change.

Take the plunge, you won't regret it!

Re: sigh

Actually, the Captivate Glide is no thicker than an iphone...
