Shudhi Movement

We all hear about the conversion mania in Muslims. Muslims and Islam has been alleged to convert people with force. But there are parallel conversion movements too.

So what is the historical background behind this Shudhi Movement? Was that a retaliation of Muslim conversion?

Re: Shudhi Movement

I never heard about Shudhi Movement:bummer: The conversion was mostly due to Sufi movement which later was countered by Bhakti movement:)

Re: Shudhi Movement

As far as I know neither of two (Sufi / Bhakti Movements) were planned for conversion. If Sufism was to promote the harmony between human beings without any discrimination, then Bhakti Movement was not there for conversion but to counter Sufi Movement through promoting positive ideas related to Hinduism.

Shudhi was a planned movement for conversion and as per this report, it converted around 1.5- 3 Million Muslims to Hinduism in a short span of time:

Lajpat Rai Shuddhi movement ‘reconverted’ 1.5-3 million Muslims | Rupee News

Re: Shudhi Movement

bhakti movement started way back in bcs during Adi shankaracharaya time in south india to counter buddhism, jainsim(yes there many jain scriptures in south india)
later it got spread to northern part of india, with shankaracharaya installing sreechakras upto kashmir

ps:never heard about shudhi movement though

Re: Shudhi Movement

Strange. You mean you never heard about Shudhi movement started by Arya Samaj? Even back in 90's Pakistani media was full of such reports.

Re: Shudhi Movement

I remember only one instance in which Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj reconverted his muslim general, who was hindu in past, back to Hinduism and gave her daughter to the son of that general:)

Lala LajPat Rai was from Punjab, I know about allegations of Music before mosque etc but not Shuddhi movement:D. Any such movement in 90s would have caused riot, 90s was the most sensitive time of India:)

Re: Shudhi Movement

Ok here what I got initially about Shudhi movement besides the article in post # 3

[QUOTE]

The Shudhi Movement started near Agrah in an area known as Malkana. Around 1923,the Hindus started a Movement with the intention that all the Muslims living in the area, who were once Hindus, would convert back to their original faith. This Movement continued secretly for a long time, and the Muslims remained completely unaware of it. When news first appeared in the papers exposing this connection, the poor Muslims sought the help of the Deoband and Dar-un-Nadwah in Lucknow. A riot erupted, and everyone started saying that this Hindu effort must be nullified and that a jihad should be waged to keep Muslims attached to their faith.

I think this might have been utilised by Muslim League during partition movement.

Media's view at early stage of Shudhi Movement

[QUOTE]

Tej Daily, published in Delhi made this announcement with great fervour:

Without Shudhi, Hindus and Muslims cannot be one.
**
The purport of the statement is: Why encourage unity between Muslims and Hindus? There is only one way to achieve Hindu-Muslim unity, which is turning all the Muslims into Hindus. There is no better way.
**
When all the Muslims are purified and become Hindus, then there would only be Hindus. [This is actually an account of a conference, which includes the report that this statement was followed by repeated clapping.] Then, no power in the world can stop India from freedom. Even if we have to suffer great adversity for the sake of the Shudhi, we still must push it forward. (Tej Daily, Delhi, March 20, 1926)

Then, the Partap newspaper writes:

The Rajputs are being purified with great speed around Agrah. Until now, some forty thousand three hundred Rajputs, Malkana, Gujars, and Jats have
become Hindus. Cases like this are found in every part of India. These people are no less than five to six hundred thousand at the very least. If the Hindu society is prepared to absorb them into itself, then I would not be surprised if their numbers reach ten million. (Partap Newspaper)

Re: Shudhi Movement

^^

where is the source..

i highly doubt about this news,to begin with there is no such thing as conversion

Re: Shudhi Movement

Just google 'daily tej shudhi movement' and the first three links refer to support of this daily for Shudhi Movement. I myself trying to locate how this was utilised by Muslim League.

Re: Shudhi Movement

i'm skeptical about this, article on post #3 is from a dubious pak nationalist site that has all sorts of weird articles it claims to pass of as news. they have a big fat link in the center of their main page dedicated to "gandhi" - his friend hitler, his sex life, etc. :D

it is really unlikely that if the numbers were true, any such mass conversion to hinduism drive hasn't gotten any attention from the hindutva freaksters in india today.

i dont doubt there have been movements like this one, i just don't think they had any success in its aims, or popular appeal. hindus are fragmented internally into castes pretty badly in the areas these sort of movements are cited to. in present day, these idiots go after converting tribals who may be converted by christian missionaries. nevermind that before the christians showed up, these people were treated like dirt by the same hindus.

Re: Shudhi Movement

:hehe: That site may have an agenda, but when I search for ‘Muslim League and Shudhi’, I found that such movements led the way to ‘two nations theory’ and formed basis for partition.

Re: Shudhi Movement

Never heard about 'Shudhi Movement'.

Re: Shudhi Movement

Even if tribal convert to christianity or Dalits convert to Buddhism, the remaining hindus will treat them according to caste. Caste is so much part of Indian society that not only Hindus but even Sikhs and Muslims are casteist:D
